Hotel Review: Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya, Indonesia | Luxurious Hotel Stay whilst scaling Mt Bromo

The Place Located at the second largest city in Indonesia, the Shangri-La Hotel in Surabaya underwent a renovation for all its rooms in the past years, and now stands ready to greet its guests with a refreshed look. You can expect a revamp to its Executive Lounge and Lobby in the coming months, giving the hotel an updated look.

The hotel is located within central Surabaya, just minutes drive away from major shopping centres and popular eateries. From Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport, the ride will take you under 45 minutes, and being well connected by various new highways, you can travel to the popular Mt Bromo and city of Malang with much ease.

The Room We checked ourselves into the 35sqm Deluxe Room, with panoramic views of the Surabaya city. The newly renovated room takes on a contemporary decor with rich earth tones, with the extensive renovation too all its rooms completed only recently in early 2018.

Spacious design, with a working desk and the lounge sofa in the room, and the efficient use of the space makes the room feel more spacious than it looks.

Nothing beats enjoying some rain shower with the amenity kit from L’Occitane en Provence.

The Facilities Resort-styled facilities can be found here at Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya. A swimming pool amidst the gardens, with a water slide for the young ones, the pool is a perfect haven from the busy city where you get to dip into the waters.

If working out is a must for you, the Health Club at the hotel is well-equipped despite it being slightly dated. Accompanying the health club, you get access to sauna and jacuzzi. And as with most Shangri-La, the in-house Chi The Spa gets you the respite you need from your busy schedule.

The room I checked in to has Horizon Club Access, where I had the option of having my breakfast in the privacy of the club. Alternatively, breakfast is also served at Jamoo restaurant if you prefer a wider spread.

The Restaurants This is perhaps the highlight of most Shangri-La, with a strong focus on dining options within the property. The popular Shang Palace, the customary brand for all Chinese restaurants in the hotel chain, kept to its traditional oriental grandeur look and classic approach to the Cantonese cuisine served here. I managed to enjoy the weekend Dim Sum brunch at Shang Palace, and was impressed by the “live” station display of the entire menu, allowing diners to see through the selections before selecting them.

The all-day dining option here, Jamoo is amongst one of the most sought after buffet restaurant in the city. International spread, with a good selection of local Indonesian delights. If Teh Tarik is served at the buffet, do make sure you get a glass of this delectable drink.

Another dining concepts here includes Italian restaurant Portofino and the centrepiece at the entrance of the hotel, the Lobby Lounge.

The Surroundings Just across the road from the hotel, Ciputra World is one of the largest shopping mall in the city. Major international brands, with a good selection of dining options are available. Shuttle services are available from the property, just approach the concierge to have that arrange.

From Shangri-la Surabaya, you are just a 20 minutes ride away from other major malls in the city, including the Pakuwon Mall and Tunjungan Plaza Surabaya; the latter where the city’s Central Business District sits.

Rants While the rooms have received a new lease of life, the rest of the hotel remains dated.

Overall Experience The sincerity of the staff is key in delivering the Shangri-La experience, and they did that exceptionally well during my stay. Whilst the hotel may not be the newest in town, the revamped rooms, and perhaps the upcoming touch-ups to the other facilities here, will again make Shangri-La a luxurious stay in Surabaya.
