The Place It has been awhile since I dropped by Kitchener Road, and what got me curious this time is this Thai restaurant called Thai Goldmine Kitchen. Located along the same row of shophouse at Putien, Thai Goldmine Kitchen is a casual Thai restaurant which specialises in its goldmine hotpot. The setting of the space is simple and open concept, so it is not the place to consider if you are looking for a hot date. The only hot item will be the food, literally.

The Food The goldmines are the signatures here as it was evident that most tables have a pot during my visit. Choose from various flavours like Pork or Seafood, which is good for sharing between three to four people. Another plus point to note – no GST and service charge!

If you are not into hotpot style, there is also quite a good selection of ala carte menu where you can order the usual Thai dishes. I went for the Pork Set (S$38) as there were three of us. The soup base is Tom Yum and you can specify the spiciness level from 1 to 5, with 2 being the norm. In terms of ingredients, the hotpot comes with noodles, four eggs, pork slices, pork balls, minced pork, mushrooms, vegetables and sausages.

I picked level 1 as one of our dining companion wasn’t nursing a sore throat, and it is very mildly spiced as expected. I will probably choose level 2 if I were to return again. The Tom Yum flavour is intense enough, while the rest of the pork ingredients are passable. For three of us, the portions are just right.

Rants We waited at least 25 minutes for our Pork Set to be served, so be patient. It might be the Tom Yum effect, though I feel that was rather warm even with the air-conditioning.

Will I Return Again? Not for the goldmine Set again, as it was an order of curiosity for me this time. It is not a good gauge of how good a restaurant is, hence I wouldn’t mind heading back to try its ala carte dishes.
