Food Review: Koji Sushi Bar at Raffles City | Is this new Japanese restaurant in City Hall worth trying?

The Place Taking over the space of Cedele, Koji Sushi Bar opened its second outlet at a quiet corner of Raffles City Shopping Centre recently, with its first outlet at Pickering Street in the CBD. Unlike its Pickering Street restaurant, the Raffles City outlet feels more spacious, with a mix of a long row of counter seats and tables.

The Food The main highlights at Koji Sushi Bar, as its name implies, remain the sashimi, sushi and sashimi don. Apart from the regular menu, it is also easy to overlook the daily specials on the board which may sound more interesting.

I was eyeing the Wagyu Sukiyaki (S$29), which was unfortunately not available. I settled for the Tokubetsu (S$29), one of the specials on the menu. It is a small bowl of sashimi rice goodness, with the likes of sea urchin, tuna, ikura and scallop topped with an egg. There is an option for white or brown rice, and the order also comes with salad and miso soup. Personally, I feel that the rice bowl is too small, probably a way to create an illusion that the sashimi is overflowing. As for the quality of the sashimi, it is average at best.

The other dish I had was the Wagyu Don (S$32), which is coincidentally one of the specials as well. The portion of this gyudon is pretty decent, where you get tender slices of the beef topped with an onsen egg. The sauce also goes well with the rice. That said, I wouldn’t say it surprises me in terms of taste.

Rants For good service, it is good to inform diners about which dishes are not available for the day from the moment they are seated. This is something the restaurant can improve on. The setting is also a little cramped.

Will I Return Again? It is welcoming to have another Japanese restaurant in Raffles City, though there is nothing very memorable about my meal at Koji.
