Food Review: Starter Lab At Havelock Road | Famous Sourdough Bakery From Bali Opens In Singapore

The Place Originally from Canggu, Bali, Starter Lab is a popular bakery on the Indonesia island which recently opened its second outlet right on our shores. Located in a shophouse along Havelock Road, the small space was packed with bread lovers on the weekend I visited. The open kitchen at the back takes up almost half the space where you can watch the bakers kneading the bread. For diners, there is a long communal table at the centre, or you might have to keep your eyes open on the next available table.

The Food While the sourdough bread is the star here where you can pack it away, there are various types of all day toast like Sunny PB&J (S$8), Salmon Smørrebrød (S$16) or simply a Thick Toast (S$7). I didn’t visit with an empty stomach, hence I only settled for the Cranberry Scones and Banana Loaf.

The scone is amazing. It is very fresh, with the right texture and buttery enough. As for the banana loaf, let’s just say it is a very competent version.

Do not miss out on the coffee here as well, which is by Anther by Glasshouse. I had the Flat White (S$6) and Iced White (S$7), where I would recommend the hot version instead. The coffee taste is medium acidic, but the flavour is strong enough for me. I like the aroma!

Rants The small space is not that ideal to chill for long.

Will I Return Again? I need to be back soon for the sourdough, or any other toast.
