Food Review: Koung’s Wan Tan Mee In Geylang | One Of Best Wanton Noodles In Singapore
The Place Located along Sims Avenue right after Lorong 21A in Geylang, Koung’s Wan Tan Mee is located in a corner coffeeshop and is easily the most popular stall here. I only managed to visit it recently despite it being on my to try list as I do enjoy wanton noodles quite a bit. The ordering system here is straightforward as you will be given a number tag after your order, and there is a digital system where you can simply look out for your number on the screen. The coffeeshop where Koung’s Wan Tan Mee is located is pretty spacious, though the parking space can be quite limited.
The Food The Wanton Noodle comes in soup or dry at S$4 each, fairy reasonable by coffeeshop standards. The Rantee and I had a plate of dry version each, except that one had chilli sauce while the other plate is tossed in black sauce.
For me, I really like the noodles which has an al dente texture. The taste of the noodle reminded me a little of Kok Kee Wanton Mee located in Lavender, that same old-school flavour though Koung’s version is firmer in texture. It goes so well with just a little bit of chilli sauce.
Another winning formula here is the char siew, which comes in relatively thick slices. The char siew is tender and has that right proportion of lean and fatty meat, which I really enjoyed eating.
I also tried a mouthful of the plate with black sauce, which I feel that the black sauce overpowered the original taste of the noodles.
We also shared a bowl of Dumpling Soup (from S$3), which I would recommend for sharing. The size of the dumpling is just right and makes it easy to have it in one mouth, where it is filled with minced meat.
Rants Parking is quite limited right beside the coffeeshop.
Will I Return Again? For a good plate of Wantan Noodles, I will gladly be back for Koung’s. For S$4, the portion is a decent size and do add some chilli for an even better flavour. This easily ranks up as one of the best wanton noodles in Singapore for me.
