Food Review: Lucid At Hamilton Road | Industrial Minimalist Cafe In Lavender

The Place Located in Lavender along Hamilton Road, Lucid is a few days old cafe in the buzzing precinct which has no lack of coffee options like Chye Seng Huat Hardware, 11 Hamilton and Apartment. I was first drawn to the minimalist metallic space of the cafe, decked in grey tone walls and metallic chairs and tables. The vibe here reminded me of cafes in Bangkok and Kyoto, which is refreshing for a change.

The cafe is currently still in its soft launch phase and while it already have a drinks and bites menu with prices, it will be on tipping basis till 31 January 2020.

The Food Coffee is the main draw for me, as the coffee menu caters to different palates by having options like Strong White (S$5) and Milky White (S$5) where the former is 130ml and the latter is 165ml. Of course, there are also intense options like Iced Black (S$5.50) and Black Coffee (S$3.50).

I started with the Strong White which comes in a small cup. The coffee flavour is relatively intense, moderate acidity and very slight bitterness.

Alternatively, the Iced Mocha (S$5.50) is not too bad an option. It is well-balanced between the coffee and Valrhona chocolate, slightly bitter as well and relatively intense. I guess the small cup helps, which helps to kee the intensity of the flavours instead of a diluted version which I am not fond of.

On to bites, there is no serious food menu per se, but you can expect their house-made bakes and pastries here such as Financier (S$1), Brownie (S$2) and Banana Bread (S$3.50). I had a slice of the banana bread which is not too sweet and it still retains a moist texture.

Rants The design of the chairs do not allow you to lean back, while the table height is quite low. If you are thinking of studying or working here over coffee, it is not that ideal.

Will I Return Again? I enjoy the coffee vibes at Lucid, and it is always welcoming for another option in Lavender. There is still potential for this area to develop into a serious coffee enclave to give Tiong Bahru a run for its money.
