Hotel Review: Hotel Jen Penang by Shangri-La | Good Value Mid-Range Hotel In the Heart Of UNESCO World Heritage George Town

The Hotel Located in the heart of the UNESCO George Town in Penang, I checked in to Hotel Jen Penang by Shangri-La last year during my weekend trip to the island after having spent a night at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang. As compared to the latter, Hotel Jen Penang is a mere 20 minutes drive from Penang International Airport definitely much more centrally located if most of your agenda is in George Town.

As compared to DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang, the design of the lobby here is much more contemporary and it exudes the chic and fun vibes of the Hotel Jen brand. The lobby area is spacious and there are plenty comfortable sofa seatings around.

The Room I checked into the Deluxe King Room which at 28 sqm, the size is decent given that I did not plan to spend much time in the hotel. I like the fun look of the room which incorporates the local Penang street murals. The rooms had been renovated in recent years and it feels better to step into the room here as compared to DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang.

You can expect fast wifi connection, and guests also have access to PressReader if you are in the mood to browse through magazines and papers. The design of the bathroom is basic and good enough for this trip.

The Facilities With an outdoor pool and fitness centre on site, the floor of the fitness centre is unfortunately not renovated. While the gym is decent, it shows signs of aging. The outdoor pool is basic and there is nothing to shout about.

There is also a Club Lounge in this property which is only granted to club rooms guests. Unfortunately, I didn’t managed to visit the lounge during my stay.

The Restaurants The all-day dining restaurant and breakfast is Cafe Jen located at the lobby. I didn’t manage to try this restaurant during my visit as my booking doesn’t include breakfast. That said, there are too many worthy options for meals given that it is Penang. Here are some of the recommended local food and cafes I checked out during my trip.

Rants Dated fitness facilities which seem out of sync with the rest of the property.

Overall Experience If you are looking for a reasonably priced mid-range hotel in George Town, I would recommend Hotel Jen Penang as the location is convenient to get around to most sights in the city centre.
