Food Review: Bedok Chwee Kueh At Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre | One Of The Best Chwee Kueh In Singapore

The Place This stall probably needs no further introduction but I thought it deserves a post on its own. Meet Bedok Chwee Kueh at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, the other Michelin Bib Gourmand contender in addition to Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodle located in the same hawker centre. When you talk about Chwee Kueh in Singapore, two stalls come to mind inevitably – Jian Bo Shui Kueh in Tiong Bahru and Bedok Chwee Kueh.

With a few outlets across Singapore, Bedok Chwee Kueh at Bedok is the original branch and you can’t escape the fate of queuing. The army of ladies in the stall is fascinating to watch as they prepare each order tirelessly.

The Food You have to order two pieces of Chwee Kueh minimally, starting from S$1 for 2 pieces, $1.50 for 3 pieces and $2 for 4 pieces, with a minimum order of 4 if you want to separate the ingredients. The best part of Chwee Keuh for me is the preserved radish, better known as ‘chye poh’. The chye poh from this stall is delicious, and the staff doesn’t stinge in the portion of it as the steamed rice cake is topped generously with it.

The Chwee Kueh here has a soft texture and while most chwee keuh are oily, this version doesn’t give me too much of the greasy feeling. I recommend having it along with some chilli, which makes the flavour better. As compared to Jian Bo Shui Kueh, the rice cake here is also bigger in size so it contains the chye poh better.

Rants Perpetually long queue, so be prepared to queue for at least 15 minutes during peak hours.

Will I Return Again? This stall is easily one of the best in Singapore. It is difficult to find a good chwee kueh stall around with a good balance of the chye poh and steamed rice cake, so I will stick to this stall to satisfy my craving.
