The Place Located in Bedok North, the few weeks old Hay Gelato is located few doors from Percolate cafe. The hole-in-the-wall space has very limited indoor tables and a few outdoor tables along the corridor.
The interior of Hay Gelato is simple and no frills, with a corny tagline on the wall.
The Food The gelato flavours here are quite unique and don’t expect to find the usual popular ones like pistachio or hazelnut. Instead, the signature flavour as the staff shared with me is the Smoked Hay, with other premiums flavours like the 65% Valrhona. Other normal flavours include the likes of Yuzu Ginger, Banana Burnt Butter and Pandan Lemongrass.
I went for the Waffle (S$5.50) with two premium flavours (S$5.20/flavour, the ordinary flavour is S$4.20/flavour) – Smoked Hay and the 65% Valrhona.
The texture of the waffle is soft and not that buttery in taste, so the highlight for me is the gelato. The 65% Valrhona is predictably intense, while the Smoked Hay is pretty unique for me as this is the first time I come across this flavour. It spots a smoky aroma and taste, and somehow it complements the chocolate quite well.
Rants The space is really tight, which means it is not a place to linger for long after having your gelato or waffle. Be prepared to wait for a table at peak hours too.
Will I Return Again? Hay Gelato is a nice addition to the Bedok neighbourhood and it definitely complements Percolate cafe as well. Have a coffee there, then hop over for some unwisely flavoured gelatos sounds like an awesome weekend plan.
