Food Review: Prawnaholic 虾的传人 At Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre | New Generation Prawn Mee With Kurobuta Pork
The Place Located at Pasir Ris Hawker Centre, Prawnaholic is located at the second level of the hawker centre where stalls are supposed to focus on hipster cuisine. Opened since 2018, not sure what took us this long before visiting here. The odd shaped tables with colourful PVC-material stools, coupled with neon signatures and graffiti on walls perhaps is a way of setting the tone for the food items diners can expect from the stalls here.
The Food A different take on Prawn Mee, that’s what Prawnaholic seeks to offer its diners. The chef-owner was only in his mid-20s when the stall opened in 2018 and I most recently spotted him on Mediacorp’s King of Culinary (三把刀), and that got me keen to head down to Prawnaholic. Being my first visit, decided to go for his Special Prawn Noodles (S$6.50) which really is his most basic offering.
From their online reviews, most are recommending me to go for their dry version. Done with their homemade black sauce, and with various ingredients, including Prawn and Pork Ball, Kurobuta Pork, Onsen Egg, and topped with pork lards and shallots. The dish also come with a bowl of prawn broth, which really packs much flavour.
Starting with the Prawn and Pork Ball, which is an unique addition to the usual Prawn Noodles.
That said, the charred Kurobuta Pork definitely stole the limelight for me. With a good split between the meats and the fats, the pork is being flamed-seared upon each order.
Give the noodles a good toss, mixing the black sauce, pork lards and shallots well with the noodles. The sweet sauce balances the saltiness of the prawn broth very well.
You can order the King Prawn Noodle and King Prawn Udon at Prawnoholic as well, that’s if you are looking to enjoy some King Prawns.
Rants I found the layout of the seats at the hawker centre to be rather inefficient. Alas, that’s not for Prawnaholic to change though.
Will I Return Again? Well, I have already returned to Prawnaholic whilst drafting this article. It is always interesting to see hawkers try their hands in reinventing some old school favourites, especially when they manage to pull it off well.
