Food Review: Tong Ah Eating House (东亞) At Keong Saik Road | Crispy Kaya Toast In Singapore Which Dates Back To 1939
The Place With a history dating back as far as 1939, Tong Ah Eating House (东亞) used to occupy the most iconic red and white building at the intersection of Keong Saik Road and Teck Lim Road, currently occupied by Potato Head Singapore. It has since relocated to 35 Keong Saik Road, and business is still brisk especially in the morning even though the space is less charming than before.

Head here for a quintessential Singaporean breakfast, where you can have your hand on the classic Kaya Toast, French Toast or Steamed Bread with Kaya.

The Food Go for the combo sets with comes with coffee or tea. I had the Crispy Thin Toast Kaya (S$5.40) set which comes with half-boiled eggs too.

Eggs are done perfectly, runny as per my expectations. If you are a tourist, the correct way to have the eggs is to add some dark soy sauce and pepper if you fancy. Otherwise, I personally like to have it neat with no condiments.

The Kaya toast per its name is very crispy. I would prefer it with more butter though.

A more sinful alternative is the French Toast with Kaya (S$6.70), topped with slices of butter and Kaya spread by the side.

I had the black Kopi O which is quite intense.

Rants There are only two outdoor tables, which I feel offers a better dining ambience than the indoor ones.
Will I Return Again? I wouldn’t specially crave for the Kaya toast from Tong Ah given that there are so many other convenient local chains which serve this dish. That said, if you are in the Keong Saik vicinity or having a staycation at Kesa House, this is one good and cheap local breakfast option.
