The Place Located in a coffeeshop in Tanjong Katong Road, I checked out Nan Xiang Chicken Rice recently on a weekend morning. The stall has been around for many years and it continues to draw regular patrons as the coffeeshop is fully packed most of the time, with most patrons having their chicken rice as I noticed. There is a public carpark right behind the coffeeshop which is a relief for drivers, though a word of caution is that it might be challenging to get a table as the coffeeshop is relatively small.  

The Food Perhaps the most interesting part of the stall front is the delicious looking roast pork and duck. Other than chicken rice, Nan Xiang also specialises in traditional charcoal roasted “char siew” aka barbecued pork, “sio bak” aka roast pork, roast chicken and roast duck. 

As it was my first time, I decided to go for the steamed chicken rice, along with addition of the “sio bak” and ‘char siew’, all for S$8.80. My only regret is that I did not manage to try the roast duck.  

The first meat I dived straight for is the char siew. I first noticed the proportionately sliced char siew meat with an almost 50-50 lean meat and fat ratio. It is a very tender texture, and the meat is so soft and delicious. I would probably like it even more it there is just a little more char on its edges, but overall, I was satisfied. 

The sio bak is equally good. Lovely crispy skin and it has fattier cuts of meat than lean meat. 

I had the steamed chicken last, and it didn’t disappoint as well. You get a soft tender chicken meat here, along with the fragrant rice which is not too greasy.

Do go with some of their chilli sauce too! 

Rants Head here early to avoid long queue, and you will have a better chance of getting a table too.   

Will I Return Again? It is rare for a stall to get all their meats right – steamed chicken, sio bak and char siew. I will return for the roast duck next and hopefully, it lives up to the standards of the other meats I had this time. This stall is worth a journey if you love chicken rice and roast meats.
