Food Review: Affordable & Popular Japanese Unagi Chain Restaurant Unatoto Opens First Singapore Outlet In Guoco Tower, Tanjong Pagar

The Place Located in Guoco Tower, Tanjong Pagar, Unatoto is a new and affordable Japanese unagi fast food chain from Japan where it recently opened its first Singapore outlet. The popular and causal restaurant has multiple outlets across Japan, where you can expect the Unadon (Unagi rice bowl) to start from S$9.50.

This is the second high profile Japanese brand which opens in Singapore this month, after we have also seen the opening of One Michelin Star Nakiryu ramen from Tokyo, which opened in Plaza Singapura.

Unatoto is located on basement one of Guoco Tower, right beside SBCD Korean Tofu House. The space is casual, and the layout is ideal for couples or small groups. The restaurant is currently not open to the public yet, and its grand opening is 25-January 2023.

The Food The menu has various Unagi sizes to choose from such as Unagi Don Topped with Egg (S$12), and other non-unagi options (but why bother?) like Oyakodon (S$8.50) and Teriyaki Chicken Don (S$8.50).

I had the Unadon Double (S$14.50) which comes with two slabs of unagi, where the unagi is grilled over binchotan charcoal where the kitchen and grill are visible from the restaurant’s entrance. The unagi itself is flavourful from the special sauce, and I like the fact that the unagi meat does not have many tiny bones which makes it easy to chew.

The other option I tried was the Unagi Tempura Don (S$15) where you get fried Unagi along with an assorted mix of vegetables, including onsen egg tempura. The tempura texture is relatively good for the price and variety, though as expected, it is a little greasy.

There is an option to top up for a value set where at additional S$5, you can choose to have either a Mini Udon or Soba, and a choice of side dish such as Onsen Egg, Edamame, and more.

Apart from the mains, there is also a variety of appetisers such as Umami (S$3) and Chawanmushi (S$5).

Rants It is not a huge space, and it might be busy during weekday lunch hours.

Will I Return Again? Unagi is often thought of as a relatively expensive and premium Japanese ingredient. I feel that Unatoto targets that void in the market in terms of serving unagi at an affordable price point. For its price point, I can imagine that this concept will be popular amongst the CBD working population and young adults.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
