Food Review: Kenji Sushi At City Gate | Hidden Japanese Omakase Restaurant Tucked Away Along Beach Road

The Place Located in City Gate along Beach Road, I checked out Kenji Sushi restaurant recently, a relatively under the radar Japanese Omakase dining concept in Singapore. Kenji Sushi is located at a corner unit on level one of the mixed development building, and it is a small space with only limited counter seats. The restaurant is helmed by Japanese Chef Kenji and is a one man show. There are very few online reviews of Kenji Sushi, a surprise to me given that it has been around for two years, and Chef Kenji has been around in Singapore for at least a few years in other Japanese restaurants previously.

The Food I went for the Lunch Omakase (S$128+), which includes Starter, Sashimi, Chawanmushi, 6 Nigiri Sushi, Uni & Ikura rice bowl, Miso soup and Dessert. Dinner Omakase starts from S$198+.

Here is what to expect for the lunch menu:

Starter
A simple combination of Japanese beancurd, mushroom and salmon roe.

Sashimi
Three types of fresh sashimi were served – Chutoro, Hamachi and Hokkaido Scallop.

Chawanmushi

Sushi

Ebi

Barracuda

Cuttlefish

Tuna

Otoro

Anago

Overall, while the sushi is decent, though I am not quite a fan of the shari (sushi rice) as I prefer it to be stronger in flavourful. The sushi rice I had here came across as too bland for me.

The last savoury course is the Uni & Ikura rice bowl, which has not much of a surprise element for me.

The last part of the meal is Miso Soup and Dessert

Rants One aspect the meal could be better would be for Chef Kenji to introduce each sushi as it is served. There are many instances I had to ask what the sushi fish is, which I thought is quite a basic ask for an Omakase experience. After all, would you as a diner not want to know what you are going to put in your mouth?

Will I Return Again? Honestly, unlikely for me. Not that it is a bad meal, but I was not impressed by any of the courses. While the lunch Omakase price is fairly competitive, I very much prefer what I had at Yuta or Sushi Yujo for a similar price range.
