Food Review: Gyu San Charcoal Bar At Forum The Shopping Mall | Affordable Japanese A5 Wagyu Hamburg Set In Orchard Road
The Place The newest concept from Gyu San in Tanjong Pagar, Gyu San Charcoal Bar located at Forum The Shopping Mall focuses on A5 Wagyu Japanese Hamburg grilled over binchotan. The restaurant boasts a warm ambience with raw wood accents, textured concrete. walls, and neutral colour palette where the centrestage is the open kitchen charcoal bar which gives you the best view of the open kitchen.
It is quite interesting to watch the chefs at work from the bar seats, where the freshly pounded beef patties are placed over the binchotan grill.
The Food The menu is quite straightforward and concise and almost everyone will go for the Gyu San Hamburg Set (S$23.80) which is priced at a competitively and include two 90g wagyu patties, Niigata Japanese Premium Rice, Miso Soup and Green Salad.
The way to enjoy the beef patties is to first have it as is, before you decide to add any of the eight different types of sauces ranging from traditional yuzu kosho to local Singaporean sambal to go along with the grilled beef patty.
The flavour of the sauces is interesting and consist of spicy and non-spicy sauces, though I very much prefer the taste of the beef patty on its own.
The beef patty is very flavourful and I can imagine that it would make a good patty with a burger. It is also served to diners on a personal mini grill to keep the patties warm.
You can then choose to add on various sides to complement your set, such as Onsen Egg (S$2.5), and an assortment of grilled vegetables like Shiitake (S$3.5), Shishito Peppers (S$5.5), Asparagus (S$4.5) and Enoki & Beef (S$3.5).
Rants You could potentially get warm from the hot grill if you are seated at the bar seats closest to the grill.
Will I Return Again? Casual and fuss-free meal in Orchard Road which should appeal to those who fancy a good, juicy beef patty in a cosy dining ambience.
