Food Review: The Bar Kakure At Scotts Road | Intimate Japanese Cocktail Bar Hidden In A Black And White Bungalow

The Place Nestled quietly on the second floor of a charming colonial black-and-white bungalow along Scotts Road, right above the acclaimed sushi restaurant Ki-Sho, The Bar Kakure is arguably one of Orchard’s best-kept secrets. True to its name (Kakure meaning hidden), this is a reservations-only joint. You literally need a passcode texted to you just to unlock the private keypad entry on the wall.

Once inside, the vibe shifts instantly into a quiet Kyoto-style retreat. The space is intimate, holding an exclusive 10 counter seats. It features rich dark wood tones, soft lighting, and wraparound timber windows that peer out into the lush treetops.

It is elegant, cozy, and perfectly sets the stage for a sophisticated evening of drinks.

The Food The beverage programme is crafted by veteran bartender Kazuhiro Chii (Chii-san). He is a Yokohama native with decades of serious mixology experience under his belt, including the opening team at Waku Ghin. The menu is a mix of flawless Japanese-style classics and clever, house-infused creations.

Its new menu “From Yokohama” presents a series of five cocktails drawn from the childhood memories of Kazuhiro Chii, who grew up in Yokohama. Flavours of his childhood are now poured into a glass and served with ice specially imported from the Ishikawa prefecture. From the new menu, I tried That Green (S$32), an adult reinterpretation of the nostalgic melon cream soda float. It is a mix of gin, champagne and vanilla ice cream, reminiscent of an ice cream float for me.

You can also get classic cocktails here, where there are ten of such cocktails on thei menu where the bar would stake their rebutation on. Expect the likes of Martini, Negroni, Old Fashioned, and Gin Fizz (S$24).

My last drink was the Tamanashi Plum with Cognac (S$38), one of the recommended drinks in the bar with sweet, dark and herbaceous notes.

No bar experience is complete without bites, and thankfully, the kitchen here collaborates with Ki-Sho downstairs to serve elevated bar snacks.

The Tuna & Uni Bites (S$24) comes in a trio of bite-size bread with bluefin tuna tartare, Hokkaido uni and caviar.

KFC (Kakure Fried Chicken) (S$24) is the bar’s signature fried chicken seasoned with their secret house-made furikake and it comes in a box of drumsticks and wings.

I also had their Ebi Katsu Sando (S$36) which uses 100% black tiger prawn topped with wasabi tartar on the brioche.

Rants Reservations only, not a space to walk-in as you fancy a drink.

Will I Return Again? I like the intimate concept of The Bar Kakure which feels like a speakeasy space. This is definitely not a casual weekly watering hole, but rather a space reserved for special occasions or when you need to escape the chaotic Orchard crowds.
