Food Review: The City Bakery Singapore At Mandarin Gallery | New York’s Famous Bakery First Outpost In Southeast Asia

The Place New bakery café alert in the heard of Orchard Road at Mandarin Gallery. The City Bakery Singapore is the local outpost of The City Bakery, founded in New York in 1990 by Maury Rubin. With a legacy spanning New York and Japan, this is the brand’s first outpost in Southeast Asia. The brand has a signature Japanese-American baking philosophy as it was Manhattan-born and Osaka grown, where the Mandarin Gallery location will also be anchored by a cafe/restaurant in addition to the bakery space.

The underlying concept of the cafe/restaurant is “Pan No Mi”, where guests can share a tipple or 2 with food and bread pairing in the restaurant. In terms of space, the dining set up is casual and more ideal for couples or 4-6 pax.

If you are just planning to get bakes from the bakery, there is a separate dining space on the opposite side of the restaurant to enjoy the bakes.

The Food For the restaurant concept, the menu is split into cold and hot tapas, steak and burger, pasta and bread tapas.

You can expect dishes with Japanese touches such as Shio Koji Roasted Chicken (S$26) with carrot sauce, yuzu kosho and shio koji marinade from the hot tapas section; Argentinian Ribeye Steak (S$52) with roasted red pepper sauce from the steak section; and Artichoke & Camembert (S$16/4 pieces) from the bread tapas section.

From the bakery, the variety of pastries are aplenty with the signature being the Pretzel Croissant (S$5), a cross between a pretzel and croissant where you get that slightly salty flavour. Giant Cookies (S$4.50) with an assortment of flavours like double chocolate and peanut butter are also available.

Beverage options include coffee & specialty drinks such as Hot Chocolate (S$8.70) where the pudding-like hot chocolate is topped with a house-made marshmallow (top up S$1.80).

Rants The bakery and restaurant are literally side by side on level two, and it might be confusing initially for diners if they are in the restaurant or bakery space. It is pretty much an open concept dining for both bakery and restaurant.

Will I Return Again? It is a wide selection of bakes in a spacious setting for diners to enjoy them with a drink on the bakery side, while the restaurant side has more natural lighting where the dine-in menu features a decent selection of non-bakes. Decent spot to have a casual meal in the heart of Orchard Road.
