Food Review: Penny University | Coffee for the serious drinker

The Place Finally there is a decent cafe to hang out in Joo Chiat area. Penny University is one of the latest player in the cafe scene and it offers a new lease of life to this area.
IMG_8529The interior of the cafe goes by industrial chic and it is much smaller than I imagined. It was packed on a Sunday afternoon and we had some problems finding a table. Thankfully, there were last few remaining empty seats on the long communal wooden table at a corner of the cafe.

The Food Coffee at Penny University is for the serious caffeine addict as there is only espresso served. IMG_8535 For something different, my recommendation is to try the Iced Muddy Espresso ($5.50), which the staff explained is some sort of reverse latte where the cold milk is added first before the espresso shot. An additional shot of espresso will cost $1 if you fancy a stronger coffee.
IMG_8532Coffee aside, we also tried the Cheese Toasties ($6) which is basically poached eggs on a slice of cheese. This is extremely value for money in my opinion as it will probably cost more than $10 bucks elsewhere. I love how runny the poached eggs are, unlike some others which I have tried. The sliced cheese also complimented well with the toast and the eggs.
IMG_8555For a taste of the pies, we ordered the S’mores pie ($6.50), which is topped with marshmallows and graham crackers. I feel that the crust of the pie is not as crispy as I would like it to be, while the chocolate is a little too soft in its texture for my liking.
IMG_8550Rants The limited seats and bad acoustics are the main drawbacks of Penny University as it gets too noisy most of the time. This is not the ideal place to chill out and read a book, but rather a cafe where you can have a quick caffeine fix and leave thereafter.

Will I return again? I would much prefer a more chill out ambience for a cafe to hang out over the weekends and Penny University clearly does not fit my bill. However, it is still worth checking out for some serious coffee, if that is your sole intention.
