Food Review: Carvers & Co | Cafe addition to East Coast Road

The Place Good news for all Easties, there is finally new cafes opening in this part of Singapore. Carvers & Co. is the latest café addition to the East and it has already been making waves in the café scene. We made time to check out Carvers & Co. this weekend after all the hype!IMG_3577Located along East Coast Road, Carvers & Co. is not the usual cosy café that dominate our café scene. The decoration of the café is really simple with no fancy furnishings and a couple of outdoor seats facing the main road (quite distracting to have a peaceful meal in my opinion). We requested for the indoor air-conditioned seats instead, which are pretty limited as well so the advice it to make a reservation. IMG_3581The Food The roast meat is the specialty of Carvers & Co. as the café reviews and changes its roast specials weekly, which is available for the dinner sessions. For brunch fares, there are not many choices which I do not view it as a bad point as the options are quite interesting, such as the Steak, Eggs and Hash ($20) or the Truffled Egg-in-the-hole Toast ($15).  IMG_3555IMG_3554The coffee is another reason which made me check out this café, as the beans are from Common Man Coffee Roasters. I had the Café Latte ($5) which gave me the punch I needed for the weekend, love the strong acidity taste of the latte. IMG_3561As for our brunch, I was quite excited to see steak with eggs so it was a no brainer for us to try the Steak, Eggs and Hash ($20). The main draw was definitely the steak, which was quite disappointing unfortunately. The quality was ordinary steak fare so do not expect any melt in the mouth palate sensation. Skip this for something else on the menu.IMG_3558As a foodie who swears by anything food containing truffle, the Truffled Egg-in-the-hole Toast ($15) was another clear option for me. I was quite surprised by the small portion of the toast as it was barely filling. The truffle oil smell was good though, which was the redeeming factor for this otherwise pretty ordinary dish. The bacon is really crispy and the texture and taste reminded me of the Chinese Bak Kwa.IMG_3569Rants Carvers & Co. has opened to much hype but failed to impress us for its rather ordinary food standard. This is rather disappointing as I think the menu is interesting and creative but there needs to be more to the taste to draw us back again. The café also does not have the chill-lax factor, which I think is quite a big draw for many café goers.

Will I return again? Doubt so as we could not find any reason to be back.
