Food Review: Café & Meal MUJI Paragon | First MUJI Cafe in Singapore finally opens!

The Place Welcome to my favourite. Started with their stationeries, my love for Muji began during my tertiary days when I carried Muji-everything to my lectures and wore Muji-anything to the hippest place in town. My countless trips to Muji’s mecca in Yūrakuchō, Tokyo, and at times, daily visits to Muji stores made me wonder if I should just get myself a room in Muji-land.
IMG_4465 And when I heard Cafe & Meal Muji will be opening it’s first ever cafe in Singapore, you can imagine my excitement. Keeping the cafe in the same Muji-inspired decor, the wooden furnitures to the simple and slick white kitchen wares, I feel right at home in this almost zen-like setting.
IMG_4458eThe Food Cafe & Meal Muji focuses on serving simple food. And by simplicity, it sticks to bringing the most out of every ingredient in its dishes.

Their mains are selections from the Deli, choosing either a 3 Deli (1 hot deli + 2 cold deli) at $12.90 or 4 Deli (2 hot deli + 2 cold deli) at $16.90. Yes, if this somewhat reminds you of the mixed rice store we have in all our kopitiams, you are right. The main difference is the rice served here are Japanese Rice and that the deli selections are focused to give diners a more wholesome and balanced meal. Of the dishes we picked, I have to agree that it truly did come across very healthy, yet satisfying. Slightly bland in taste, yet comforting.
editedJust had to. When you are torn between 2 drinks to compliment your meal, order both! Had the Iced Yuzu Squash ($5.90) and Iced Matcha Latte ($4.90). Frankly, I tried both before in Japan, but sipping these drinks here at home ground was mind-blowing, literally. Don’t get me wrong though, the drinks at Muji will not be the best Japan has to offer. I always lament the drinks at Muji seemed pre-mixed (and I think they probably are), but it’s done with the usual Japanese-demanding standards that you are probably having the best pre-mixed drinks ever.
IMG_4475eTo cap it off, how does ending the meal with a Roasted Tea Pudding ($5.40) sounds? Hojicha over Matcha, anytime. Satisfying, although the texture seems a tad too soft.

Rants Not exactly the most affordable, priced slightly above their Japanese cafes (3 Deli at ¥850).

Will I Return Again? It doesn’t matter if the food ain’t the best, or if the drinks are truly premix. Muji to me is like Disneyland to some, we return only because we find solace and happiness just being in it. Full marks for ambience here, because …
