The Place Located about a 15mins drive westwards from Georgetown in Penang, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa is a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. While not a new property, it retains the old charm vibes of the resort with overarching trees dotting the property, while the hotel has been renovated in recent years to give it a modern interior and finishes. Two wings to the hotel, with the Rasa Wing for the more exclusive guests, and the Garden Wing for the folks who cares but sticks to their budget. The Rasa Wings comes complete with their own breakfast restaurant, an Executive Lounge, and of course, their own swimming pool – a pool not even the young, 16 and below, can visit.
The Room We checked ourselves in to the Rasa Wing Premier Room, and at 62sqm, this is the largest of the room sizes before the suites. The room comes complete with a soaking tub at your balcony where you can relax while enjoying the sea views beyond the lush gardens fronting the Rasa Wing. Of course, with the size of the room, you get to do some work on the long working desk, with a living space done up and a bar counter included, a wardrobe and a 3-seater sofa to give you no excuse to leave the room at all.
The toilet comes with a double vanity basins, and separate showers as well. And if it matters to you, like it did for us, the toiletries are from L’occitane en Provence.
The Facilities Now, if you think Shangri-La Penang is just but any resort, I will beg to differ. With their resort fronting the Batu Feringgi Beach in Penang, you get to enjoy the beach to your own – although it is not truly a private beach. The gardens here are well covered by many deck chairs, just pick your favourite spot for the day and chill under the shades of the tall tress, with the read of the day in hand.
If you want a dip in the pool, pick from one of the two swimming pools in the resort, with one of them specially reserved only for the Rasa Wing though. That said, the swimming pool across at the Garden Wing will more than suffice your need. The large gym facility will help anyone trying to stay fit during their stay, this gym is definitely well equipped fitting for a resort of this size.
And if you are looking to chill your day away at the Rasa Sayang Resort, a visit to Chi Spa should be amongst your top priority. The Pandas couldn’t resist it, and headed for our own treatments during the stay. Private rooms are norms at spa, but here, they went a step further and have their treatments all done in private villas! Make sure you visit the Chi Spa while at here, make very sure.
The Restaurants Breakfast here is serve at Spice Market Cafe. Located at the ground floor of the Garden Wing, the spread is well curated to cater both local and international cuisine. From sipping your Teh Tarik, to pairing this with the scrambled eggs, the spread at the breakfast buffet was more than decent. For folks staying over at the Rasa Wing, you can choose to head to the Feringgi Grill for your breakfast instead. The buffet line here is much less extensive, although you get to choose from a wide selection of breakfast sets, which offer you local Malaysia delights to Australian Brunch selections such as Poached Eggs. If you appreciate privacy and quiet moments, we say head to Feringgi Grill.
Of course, if you are keen to enjoy the local Penang fare or to explore the booming cafe scene here, just take a short 15mins taxi ride out to Georgetown. We did just that, and you can read more about it here – Snippets: 10 restaurants, cafes and street stalls to eat in Penang.
Rants While Penang ain’t big, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa Penang ain’t located in the main tourist districts. The ride from the airport to the hotel will take you approximately 45 to 60 minutes, from the southeast corner of Penang to the northwest corner where Rasa Sayang is located. From Rasa Sayang Resort, the ride to Georgetown will take you a good 15 minutes as well. But well, nothing beats having a resort like this to chill and relax in after all the exploration of Penang, so that bit of road travelling counts for nothing!
Now, when’s the next flight to Penang?
