The Place For those who are familiar with Soon Soon Teochew Porridge in Kovan, you will be glad to know that its ex-owner and chef is now at White House Teochew Porridge (白家潮州糜) along Serangoon Road. Located in a corner shophouse, White House Teochew Porridge occupies the entire coffeeshop, hence seats are pretty ample. For those who are not so familiar with Boon Keng district, it is close to Homeground Bar & Grill and 126 Dim Sum.
The Food Expect a wide variety of Teochew dishes at the counter where you simply pick your own dishes by portion, like a normal ‘cai fan’ stall. The staff will prepare the dishes on small plates and bring it to your table. I didn’t manage to get a cost breakdown of each dish, but total I had for the below including one bowl of porridge is S$28.10.
I couldn’t resist getting the Teochew Braised Duck ‘Lor Ark’ (S$6), which is very tender and flavourful in the dark sauce. In general, all the dishes I had go very well with Teochew Porridge.
Another must try is the Black Bean Fish, a regular size pomfret fish tossed in black bean sauce. The fish is fresh and the black bean sauce makes it especially tasty.
Other small side dishes I ordered are the Hae Bee Hiam, Stir-fried Cabbage and Tofu with Minced Meat. The flavours here are generally light on the palate, yet comforting. It is exactly what I remember a typical Teochew meal at home used to be. Simple fares and flavours, nothing fanciful yet very familiar.
Rants Frankly am struggling to find a rant for this dining spot. Not a fanciful place to dine, but at White House Teochew Porridge it is the comfort food you are seeking.
Will I Return Again? For those who find parking an issue at Kovan, there is ample parking space at a public carpark right behind White House Teochew Porridge (enter from Beng Wan Road). Well-ventilated coffeeeshop space, comfort food and this is definitively worth trying if you are looking for a fuss-free Teochew meal.
