Food Review: The Blue Ginger Restaurant At Tanjong Pagar Road | Michelin Bib Gourmand Restaurant With Hearty Peranakan Dishes

The Place It’s easy to overlook The Blue Ginger in the buzzing Tanjong Pagar, where food options are aplenty. Located in a two-storey shophouse right beside Teppan Kappou Kenji, this Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant has been on my to go list for Peranakan food for some time. I made a same day reservation and was lucky to score a last minute table. The space at level one of The Blue Ginger is more casual and open, while I very much prefer the more intimate ambience on level two where the Peranakan vibes is more evident.

The Food As with Bib Gourmand establishments, prices are quite reasonable for most dishes by Peranakan restaurant standards. There is a good mix of classic appetisers, mains, seafood and vegetables. For a start, the Bakwan Kepeting (S$7) comes in a small serving bow but packs much flavours. The soup of this meat ball soup dish is light and hearty, while the meat ball is delicious.

The Otak Otak (S$4) is another must have Starter here. You get very fresh fish flavour in this milky spicy fish paste dish.

Kueh Pie Tee (S$8) is my Peranakan staple for starters. Served in a set of four mini cones, this version is topped with chilli sauce though it is not very spicy to handle. The ingredients like vegetables and prawn are packed nicely such that it doesn’t fall off easily while biting into the cone.

Other dishes I had for sharing include the Curry Vegetables (S$14) and Ayam Buah Keluak (S$23). I didn’t expect to have extra serving of rice, but the curry vegetables simply goes so well with white rice. The curry is ‘lemak’ enough, yet not too spicy.

My favourite Peranakan dish is the Ayam Buah Keluak. This dish here comes with three black nuts, which I really enjoyed. The black sauce and tender chicken here are a great combination to go with rice as well.

To end off the meal, the Chendol (S$4.50) here is competent though not extraordinarily good.

Rants The Blue Ginger is a casual diner, despite its location in CBD, it is not the most ideal for a business meal.

Will I Return Again? Prices are reasonable at The Blue Ginger and it is good value Peranakan food in my opinion. It is worth a return trip for sure.
