Food Review: Kee Hiong Bak Kut Teh at Chinatown | Authentic Malaysia Herbal Broth From Klang, Malaysia
The Place Located at People’s Park Centre in Chinatown, Kee Hiong Bak Kut Teh is a chain restaurant with 7 other branches in Malaysia – where it originated from. The restaurant may be hard to locate, though the first thing is to make sure you are in People’s Park Centre, and not People’s Park Complex. Once you are at the right shopping mall, locate the coffee stall Ya Kun, Kee Hiong Bak Kut Teh is right opposite them.
The Food Similar to Jia Bin Klang Bak Kut Teh and Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh, Kee Hiong serves up Malaysia-style herbal broth. Though Kee Hiong’s founding family is credited to have pioneered the herbal bak kut teh in Malaysia’s Klang back in the 1940s. If you are looking for that authentic flavour, perhaps Kee Hiong does it the most traditional way.
The herbal broth is prepared with 16 herbs, including Dang Gui, Dang Shen, Red Dates, Goji Berries, Licorice Roots and Yu Zhu. Do not expect a thick broth though, as the soup for the Singapore’s branch is a lighter version compared to its Malaysia counterparts. Go for the Spare Ribs Soup (S$7.00) here, the entry level Bak Kut Teh selection here. We found the meats tender, and the broth rather enjoyable.
For something different, order the Dry Bak Kut Teh (S$8.80). Done with stir-frying the pork ribs and other pigs innards with dark soup sauce, this is a perfect dish to go with rice. Be warned though, it does not come with a soup – which I thought that perhaps they should serve a small bowl of the broth!
And of course, Dough Fritters (S$1.60), or more popularly known as You Tiao, is a must for Pandas while having Bak Kut Teh.
Rants We walked rounds to locate the restaurant because there are various units with the same unit number #01-05.
Will I Return Again? Enjoyed the meal at Kee Hiong, and glad to find yet another Klang-style Bak Kut Teh in Singapore – which I very much prefer over the Teochew peppery broth.
