Snippets: New and Buzzing Singapore Restaurants in December 2020

New Restaurants

Japanese food concepts are making its way to Singapore recently. After Tempura Tendon Tenya’s opening in Orchard Central last month, one of Japan’s most beloved and iconic pancake chains, Flipper’s Singapore made its debut in Southeast Asia with a flagship store at Takashimaya Shopping Centre, Ngee Ann City in November. The pancake brand is famous for its kiseki or ‘miracle’ pancake, where the pancakes are known for its fluffy and pillow-soft texture, so much so that they are served with two forks as part of Flipper’s signature experience. French Fold
Checked out Merci Marcel Group’s latest dining concept French Fold along Telok Ayer, an all-day dining destination. It is a charming space as I entered the restaurant, decked in contemporary Scandinavian furniture, where the centrestage of the space is the communal table towards the end of the restaurant where you get a dose of natural light through the glass ceiling. Aesthetic is definitely a strong focal point for the Merci Marcel Group as all their concepts thus far are very well-designed in terms of their interior. [Read more here…]

Tucked in a corner of the buzzing Dempsey Hill, the recently opened Hathaway is a gorgeous space opened by the same team behind Bread Yard in Fusionopolis. The interior of Hathaway is beautiful, as I was drawn to the ample natural lighting in the day, the high ceiling which makes it spacious, as well as the nice arches. Apart from indoor seats, there are also a couple of outdoor seats which is only nice if the weather is forgiving. [Read more here..]

House of Chirashi
I love my Chirashi Don and Omote is my go to causal restaurant for my chirashi fix. Whilst not exactly new, I checked out the six months old hole-in-the-wall restaurant called House of Chirashi located in East Village in Simpang Bedok. The 9-seater restaurant can only accommodate 6 pax due to social distancing, and reservation is definitely highly recommended. [Read more here…]

Menbaka Fire Ramen
After popular Japanese brands like Tenya and Flipper’s opened in Orchard Road recently, Menbaka Fire Ramen from Kyoto will be opening its first overseas outlet in Singapore on 24 November at Cineleisure Orchard. Menbaka is the inventor of Kyoto’s famous fire ramen and with only one outlet in Japan, this also makes Singapore its second outlet in the world. The brand was opened in 1984 by ramen master Masamichi Miyazawa, and it has remained as Japan’s Number One Fire Ramen. [Read more here…]

Israeli restaurants are not common in Singapore, and there is finally one new Israeli dining concept which opened at Stanley Street this month. Meet Miznon, a causal dining Israeli restaurant by Chef Eyal Shani, the judge behind MasterChef Israel. This is Miznon’s first outlet in Asia, where the brand which hails from Tel Aviv, Israel, has an international footprint of 10 outlets across the cities of Vienna, Paris, New York, and Melbourne. Necessary Provisions
One of a strong contender in the cafe scene in Upper Bukit Timah at Eng Kong Terrace previously, Necessary Provisions closed back in 2018 and I am happy to see the familiar cafe brand reopened few days ago along Tanglin Road. The new space of Necessary Provisions is tucked within SmartFit Pilates Singapore, a pilates studio, in a soothing earthy and wooden tones for its interior. If you were to drive, parking at Tanglin Mall or Regent Singapore works, otherwise the nearest MRT station is Orchard which is about 10-15 minutes walk away. [Read more here…]

Food Folks
Located at Lau Pa Sat, Food Folks is a key concept within the revamped market. A visit to the renovated space will impress you, and kudos to NTUC Enterprise for keeping up this heritage spot in CBD after taking over from years of rather poor management (in our opinion) from Kopitiam. Comprising of 10 dining concepts and a retail space, including the likes of Gopizza, Chef Kang’s and Glyph Supply Co’s second cafe Runes. For the retail space, you will find more than two-thirds of the products from local brands, so make sure you head down to support.

Hack It
A new concept from Jumbo Group, in addition to their recent buyout of Kok Kee Wanton Mee which was been making headlings, Hack It will debut on 3rd December as an online seafood meal delivery concept. Make sure you order their seafood packs selections, and paired them with sauces such as Chilli Crab Sauce, Black Pepper Sauce, Mala Sauce,  Creamy Butter Sauce, Sweet and Spicy Tomato Sauce, and Ginger Spring Onion Sauce – there’s really one for each!

Hay Gelato
Located in Bedok North, the few weeks old Hay Gelato is located few doors from Percolate cafe. The hole-in-the-wall space has very limited indoor tables and a few outdoor tables along the corridor. The interior of Hay Gelato is simple and no frills, with a corny tagline on the wall.

The Garage Blooms With New Menu For Bee’s Knees And Botanico
It is one of our favourite dining concept when it first opened few years ago, and we are glad that Botanico and Bee’s Knees both spot new menus launched recently. Expect new dishes such as Executive Chef Sue’s “Herbal Chicken” which is a combination of various Chinese herbs; Corn Pani Puri with puffed little pillows of Puri encasing curried Japanese corn espuma and spiced baby corn; Crab Rissoni of Japanese deep-sea red crab and blue swimmer crab, Japanese nori risoni, comte custard and octopus bottarga; and a contemporary version of Singapore’s Rojak, amongst others. From Bee’s Knees, be warned that the Spicy Duck Loaded Fries & Fiery Shrimp Pizza are very addictive!
