Food Review: Hathaway At Dempsey | Gorgeous Cafe And Restaurant Serving Fusion Cuisine

The Place Tucked in a corner of the buzzing Dempsey Hill, the few weeks old Hathaway is a gorgeous space opened by the same team behind Bread Yard in Fusionopolis. The interior of Hathaway is beautiful, as I was drawn to the ample natural lighting in the day, the high ceiling which makes it spacious, as well as the nice arches. Apart from indoor seats, there are also a couple of outdoor seats which is only nice if the weather is forgiving.

The Food There is not particular cuisine at Hathaway, though the food takes reference from a diverse culture, just like how in Singapore where how we are exposed to various types of cuisines. There is a separate lunch, dinner and brunch menu, along with a selection of pastries.

I visited the restaurant for lunch and decided to go for the Forager’s Eggs Benedict (S$36) from the brunch menu. My first thought is the price tag, how different is Eggs Benedict if it is priced at a hefty price tag of S$36? Well, for one the portion is huge. It is served with Challah Bread from Jewish cuisine, and the bread portion easily feeds two people.

The ingredients used here are quite luxe sounding as well, think Black Truffle, Smoked Salmon Mousse and Trout Roe, served along with Baby Watercress & Coriander Salad. It is not too bad overall but for the price tag, it is only justifiable if shared between two people.

Other options on the brunch menu include the likes of Pengat Pisang French Toast (S$28) and Hathaway’s Big Breakfast (S$36).

For pastry, the Kouignamann (S$4.50) wouldn’t go very wrong as it is freshly baked and buttery enough. It is best enjoyed with coffee, at least that is how I like to have my pastry with.

The White 8oz (S$6) Flat White I had is pretty decent, as the coffee taste is quite smooth and punchy.

Rants Prices of the dishes are steep in general, and I was surprised that it was still relatively packed on a weekday afternoon.

Will I Return Again? Overall, I had a good experience at Hathaway from the service to the food. Other than the fact that it is quite pricey, I really like the space as well. This is an ‘atas’ cafe for sure, and I will probably return for its other menus.
