Food Review: Kaunta Singapore At Onze, Tanjong Pagar | Value For Money Lunch Omakase From S$50

The Place Tucked away in Onze building Tanjong Pagar, Kaunta Singapore is a cosy 20-seater omakase restaurant. Most of the seats are counter seats where it is a close interaction with the chef. I love my Japanese omakase meals, and Tanjong Pagar is definitely one hot breeding ground in terms of the omakase competition, from the likes of Rockon Tokyo, Ryo Sushi, and Hiryu.

The Food Affordability is the main draw at Kaunta where lunch omakase starts from S$50, while dinner omakase starts from S$180. I went for the most value for money Omakase Kiri (S$50), which includes an Appetizer, 7 pieces sushi, Hot dish, Miso soup and Dessert.

My meal started with the Appetizer – Sakura Ebi Salad with wasabi dressing. One aspect I noticed about the lunch, it is quite fast-paced.

The next few courses are dedicated to the sushi. I was chatting with the chef and the sushi here at Kaunta are mostly aged, which gives it a more flavourful taste as compared to other omakase restaurants. In sequence of appearance:

Milan Tai (sea bream), aged 15 days.

Amberjack (Kapachi), aged 15 days.

Salmon, smoked in-house topped with golden ikura. This is interesting as it is my first having golden ikura.

Spanish Mackerel with red wine miso, aged 15 days. Another of my favourite sushi course here, the red wine miso really elevates the flavour of the mackerel.

Hata (grouper)

Akami Tuna, aged 10 days.

Shima Aji, aged 16 days.

The Hot Dish served was the Unagi Chawanmushi with homemade mushroom Dashi sauce. Delicious chawanmushi here, and is generous with the unagi as well.

The last proper savoury dish is the Omelette sushi engraved with the restaurant’s name, Kaunta.

Miso Soup is served next, filled with clams.

The omakase then concludes with the Dessert, a choice of Hojicha or Yuzu ice cream.

Rants Small space, where it is easy to overhear others or be overheard.

Will I Return Again? S$50 omakase is hard to but in terms of value, and I do enjoy my lunch experience at Kaunta. I am actually keen to head back for its dinner omakase one day!
