Food Review: Wagyu Jin At Shaw Centre, Orchard Road | Wagyu Beef Focused Omakase Menu By Les Amis Group

The Place There aren’t many beef-centric omakase restaurants in Singapore and I was excited to make a reservation for Wagyu Jin, a new prefecture-focused Wagyu omakase concept in Shaw Centre Orchard Road. Led by Executive Chef Makoto Saito, the space is extremely intimate with a seating capacity of less than 20. Wagyu Jin adds to the extensive list of restaurants under the Les Amis Group.

The Food The highlight of Wagyu Jin is well, the Wagyu beef and it specialises in A5 Wagyu from various Japanese prefectures like Gifu, Shiga, Miyazaki, Iwate and Tochigi. The seasonal Wagyu omakase menu has 6 – 8 courses (Lunch from S$118++, Dinner from S$238++) and the beef are prepared in different techniques for each course. There are also various ala carte items should you wish to add on to your Omakase meal.

I went for the 6-course Lunch Omakase Menu (S$118++ per person), starting with the Somen. A cold appetiser which features Hokkaido hairy crab mixed with Sea Urchin, where flavours are fresh.

Next up is the Yakiniku course done with A5 Miyazaki Beef. Three tender slices of beef in three condiments – Wasabi, Japanese leek and Kimchi with cucumber. Each condiment brings out distinct flavour of the well-marbled Wagyu where my favourite is surprisingly the Japanese leek!

The third course is Sushi where I had A5 Hida Beef. Sadly, it is just one piece though it is a pretty big slab of Hida beef. It reminds me of my trip few years back in Takayama where Hida Beef is aplenty on the streets.

Fourth course is Awabi, or known as Abalone. Frankly, I wasn’t expecting much since I’m never a big fan of abalone but this version surprised me. It is a huge piece of the highly prized seafood served with a small portion of rice, and soaked in a delicious sauce. Very flavourful abalone here, and the taste of the dish is even better as I mix it all with the rice and sauce.

The last savoury course of my lunch is also my favourite, Sukiyaki. It features A5 Tochigi Beef, served with onsen egg, rice, soup and pickles.

I was recommend to have a few slices of the beef as is first, before adding the onsen egg in. Lovely tender beef flavours, though it is more accentuated after adding the egg.

For dessert, it is a simple Yuzu Sorbet for a refreshing end.

Rants Relatively small space and portions are not huge especially for the first few courses.

Will I Return Again? The concept of Wagyu Jin reminds me of The Gyu Bar, both of which focuses on premium beef omakase menu. You get quality ingredients for a meal at Wagyu Jin, and I definitely don’t mind to return for more of its premium beef.
