Food Scoops: Kyoto In Autumn Weekend Afternoon Tea At One-Ninety Bar And Garden | Best Matcha White Chocolate Scones In Four Seasons Hotel Singapore

What’s Buzzing? Available from 3 September to 27 November at One-Ninety Bar and Garden in Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, there is a new Kyoto in Autumn Weekend Afternoon Tea by guest Pastry Chef Reiko Yokota of Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto.

The outdoor space of One-Ninety Bar and Garden is well-ventilated, and it exudes a charming tropical vibe.

What To Expect? Specially crafted chinaware in earthy tones inspired by traditional bento boxes reveal a petite poetry of sweet and savoury delights. The Savoury Box comes with indulgent King Crab Chawanmushi, Bottarga and Chive Tart, Saikyo Miso Foie Gras Terrine, Smoked Salmon – Wasabi, and Eggplant and Unagi finger sandwiches.

My favourite of the lot is the Bottarga and Chive Tart and the Unagi finger sandwich.

The other box is The Sweets Box presented with “Kuri Kinton” Candied Chestnut, Yuzu White Chocolate Bonbon, Matcha Moss Sphere, Sweet Soy and Ginger Mousse, Japanese Strawberry Mochi, and Hōjicha Tea and Apricot Cookie sandwich. The Sweet Soy and Ginger Mousse is amazing.

The last bit of the food is the Freshly Baked Scones specially created Ginger Confit and Matcha White Chocolate scones, made with coconut oil instead of butter, served warm with Clotted Cream, Yuzu Posset and housemade Cherry Jam.

My take on the scones is that it is absolutely worth trying. I love the intense matcha flavour of the matcha scone, and the subtle bit of ginger element in the ginger scone. Very well-balanced flavours for both scones, freshly baked, and looks and taste more like artisanal cookies instead.

In terms of beverages, there is a trinity of Japanese inspried craft cocktails such as the Kabata Sour (Sake Central Yuzushu with Nikka Coffey Vodka; rum-based Nishiki and gin-forward Bloody Tsukemono (Japanese Pickled Tomato, Ki No Bi Kyoto Dry Gin, Bloody Mary Spices, Ambarella and topped with Champagne).

For tea options, specially handpicked for this season are floral and herbacious teas Sakura Flower, Osmanthus Sencha and Shiso Mint, and roasted green teas Hojicha and Genmaicha.

Overall Experience An exquisite afternoon tea experience where the Japanese element in strong, and what’s more, you have the best scones as well in my opinion.
