Food Review: Kantin At Jewel Changi, Singapore | A Taste Of Borneo Flavours From Sarawak’s Restaurant Brand

The Place We rarely get a Borneo focused restaurant which piqued my interest to check out the few weeks old Kantin at Jewel Changi. Located on level five of the airport mall, Kantin serves Borneo inspired dishes in Singapore and it spots a casual open concept space. In terms of dining, the restaurant’s layout fits couples or small group diners.

The brand Katin hails from Sarawak, and Singapore is their second outlet, also their first overseas outpost.

The Food Expect dishes like Rainforest Fried Rice, Jungle Omelette, Salmon Island and the renowned Sarawak Laksa. Kantin also proudly offers the “Headhunter Pansuh Set,” a dish steeped in Borneo’s age-old traditions. Come evenings, it also does Borneo-inspired cocktails.

I decided to try the Headhunter Pansuh Set (S$32) since it was recommended by the staff. It comes with purple borio rice along with side dishes like Keropok, side vegetables and chicken served on bamboo.

The chicken is quite tender which comes with a clear broth within the bamboo, which is great to go along with the rice. Overall, an interesting glimpse into the forest culture of the Borneo region through the presentation of this dish.

I also had the Sarawak Laksa (S$18) which comes with prawns and chicken. Served with sambal by the side, the laksa broth itself is tasty and creamy, though it is also not as creamy in terms of coconut milk as compared to the Singaporean laksa in general.

It is also not too spicy, where the extra sambal comes into play if you wish to up the spiciness.

There are also a couple of sides to order like the Mossy Mushroom Fritters (S$15) I had, a crispy tempura-like snack.

In terms of drinks, the Kantin Kaffeine (S$10) is a special coffee blend per what I understood from the staff. Pretty smooth coffee flavour, though it is quite pricey for a cup of coffee.

Rants Some dishes on the menu are only available after a certain timing, which makes it confusing for diners as the specific timings are not stated on the menu.

Will I Return Again? Overall, Kantin is an interesting option to check out in Jewel Changi since I rarely come across a Borneo restaurant in Singapore. The flavours are relatable to me, and you really could not go very wrong with dishes like laksa and fried rice on the menu.
