Food Review: Wagyu X At Club Street | Japanese Steakhouse With Hokkaido Special Wagyu Crossbred [Closed]

The Place Occupying a two-storey shophouse space along Club Street, Wagyu X by Chef Masahiro Takata is a new Japanese steakhouse restaurant concept which focuses on a new Hokkaido special Wagyu crossbreed not commonly found outside Japan. The “X” in Wagyu X stands Wagyu Cross (crossbreed).

The space of Wagyu X takes on an elegant industrial wooden tone with wooden chairs and grey walls, where you get nice natural light in the day especially on level two.

The Food My meal started with a complimentary Amuse Bouche of Vinaigrette cherry tomatoes and seaweed, topped with ikura.

Some appetisers followed next, where I had Corn Mousse with Uni (S$30) and Hokkaido Scallop (S$26). The former is a bite-size mouthful of Hokkaido corn mousse with salmon ikura and Bafun uni, while the Hokkaido Scallop features sashimi-grade scallops baked in butter and then dressed with a side of housemade capsicum puree.

Go for the scallop dish if you can only pick one which I find relatively more value for money as compared to the small portion of the corn mousse with uni.

For the main highlight of the meal, I had the Wagyu X Sirloin 500g (S$160). The Hokkaido breed for the beef here is bred from the crossing of Kuroge black wagyu cow and Aberdeen Angus bull. The flavour of the beef is succulent, and you get that nice balance of fattiness and meatiness.

This portion is good to share for two pax, and you can have the beef with the accompanying condiments like fried garlic chips and a pinch of salt.

Some sides to go along with the steak include the likes of Matsutake Fries (S$12), Roasted Japanese Pumpkin with Walnuts (S$12) and Cream Spinach (S$12).

Nothing much to shout out about the side dishes here, the fries are addictive, though I did check if I could get chilli sauce to go with it but was told by the staff that there is only mayonnaise sauce.

For dessert, I had Tiramisu (S$18) and Burnt Cheesecake with Ice Cream (S$18). Not too exciting dessert options here unless you insist on ending your meal with a sweet ending.

Rants Service for the food was a tad slow during my visit, which seems to be an issue with a shortage of staff.

Will I Return Again? I would say come for the beef at Wagyu X, which is unsurprisingly the best part of my meal here. The prices for the Wagyu beef are a tad high, which is probably by virtue of the rarity of this breed of Hokkaido beef the restaurant uses. Starters and desserts could be skipped.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
