Food Review: Fu Hui Gen Tang At Thye Hong Industrial Centre | Taiwan’s 40-year-old Famed Specialty Soup Restaurant

The Place Located in Thye Hong Industrial Centre along Leng Kee Road, Fu Hui Gen Tang is a pretty interesting new concept to me. Founded in 1984 in Taiwan with six outlets across Taiwan, Fu Hui Gen Tang is the purveyor of traditional Chinese herbal super soup, the interior of the restaurant is spacious with two main dining halls, including tatami-style tables and two private rooms. The restaurant also enhances the wellness experience with a dedicated space for customers to rest and rejuvenate between courses.

And yes, that includes a room with massage chairs which I managed to use after my meal.

A brief history of the brand is that it was co-founded by Professor Wu, a renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, who discovered and spent years researching on Fu Hui Gen, a prescription of 50 Chinese medicinal herbs from the three divine physicians of the late Eastern Han Dynasty (Hua Tuo, Dong Feng, and Zhang Zhongjing). This prescription was originally designed to maintain the health of emperors, imperial concubines, and healthy individuals.

The Food Each soup is brewed using 50 carefully selected traditional Chinese herbs, brewed for over 24 hours using the time-honoured ”九蒸九晒” (nine steaming and nine sun-drying) method. Main benefits of their soup include rejuvenating, immunity-boosting, and detoxifying benefits. The restaurant recommends savouring three bowls (600ml) before a meal, on an empty stomach, to maximize its benefits. This practice represents: entering the liver for detoxification, entering the spleen for nutrient absorption, and entering the kidneys for storage. You can choose from curated individual set menu or à la carte options.

There are three types of soups – Fu Hui Gen Tang (Original) S$188 for 2 pax / $368 for 4 pax; Fu Hui Gen Tang (Chicken) S$218 for 2 pax / $428 for 4 pax; and Fu Hui Gen Tang (Mushroom), vegetarian option S$208 for 2 pax / S$408 for 4 pax.

Note: Fu Hui Gen Tang’s soup is not recommended for individuals who have recently undergone major surgery; those with alcohol allergies; women in the early stages of pregnancy; and children under six years of age.

The individual set menu includes three bowls of Fu Hui Gen Tang (chicken), black fungus with vinegar, celtuce, white braised pig trotter, vermicelli with egg white, and a dessert of the day, with introductory price of S$108+ per person (U.P. S$118+) from now till 31 March 2025.

In terms of value, the Omakase Menu is more value for money in my opinion. I had their Omakase Menu and the meal started with 3 bowls of Fu Hui Gen Tang (Chicken). I must say what is really unique is that the same pot of soup tastes differently to each person based on their individual constitution, a reflection of one’s emotional and physical well-being.

According to the master, the taste from the first to the third bowl will also have slight variation as your body gets used to the herbal soup.

Another interesting discovery for me is that there is slight alcohol in the soup, so for those who have a low tolerance of alcohol, you might feel flushed as well. Overall, the soup tasted slightly sour for me and I was flushed for sure. Three bowls of soup per person is basically the whole mini pot presented in front of me.

Of course, you can choose to nibble on the chicken meat if you want!

After the soup, some light bites followed such as the Black Fungus with Vinegar and Celtuce. I must say the flavours of the dishes are quite light and not heavily seasoned.

For protein, I had the collagen rich White Braised Pig Trotter which is tender and flavourful.

On to carbs, it is a small bowl of Vermicelli with Egg White

The meal ended with the Dessert of the Day

Rants The portion of the dishes after the soup courses are quite small, such that I was not really that full after the whole meal.

Will I Return Again? This is not a typical soup restaurant. It is an interesting experience at Fu Hui Gen Tang to say the least, and it is a very detoxing meal for me. Head here with an open mind and this is probably the best of both worlds if you love alcohol and soup.
