Food Review: The Clan Restaurant

The Place Located in Bukit Pasoh Road amidst the old conservation buildings of Chinatown district is The Clan, a modern European restaurant which prides itself on its degustation menu (6 course dinner at $62.80++). I like the location of The Clan, as it is so conveniently located close to town yet you simply feel a little out of the world along Bukit Pasoh Road.

I love the minimalist interior design of The Clan, which is modern yet rustic within the old building setting. Seatings are limited to retain some privacy for diners and I really appreciated that as it made the meal experience much more exclusive. Reservations are a must as the restaurant is fully packed when I was there on a Saturday evening.

The Food The degustation menu is the key highlight of The Clan but I opted for the a la carte menu instead and managed to try most of the featured dishes on its menu – the Spiced Braised Lamb Shank, 48 hours Beef Short Ribs on lava stone and Chocolate Lava with home made gelato.

Upon ordering, we were served with refreshing fruit punch.

From the sides menu, we ordered the Herb Crusted Mushroom Escargot ($15) which served by per portion. The presentation of the dish is different from the usual fashion in a hot pan. The escargot is chewy and goes very well with the herbs, which is a huge draw for this dish as it compliments the taste of the escargot greatly.

For mains, we ordered the recommended 48 hours Beef Short Ribs on
lava stone
($29) which has eight slices of beef. The presentation feels like a fusion of Western and Japanese fashion, especially with the hot lava stone which allows me to control how well done I would like my beef to be. It was a very novel dish for me and I am very pleased with the quality of the tender beef, which kind of melt in my mouth.

IMG_8370The other mains we tried was also a featured dish, the Spiced Braised Lamb Shank ($29), accompanied with potato and extra virgin olive powder. Similar to the short ribs beef, the Lamb Shank is tastefully done as well. The lamb is very tender and I feel that the level of cooking is optimal such that it is not too overcooked.

IMG_8372For desserts, we had the Chocolate Lava with home made Gelato ($10), which I think is one of the best I have ever had. The chocolate oozes out perfectly while the gelato taste is rich and creamy, and compliments well with the chocolate lava. The chocolate is rich yet does not make me feel like I am over-indulging. This is the perfect dessert to end our dinner on a high note.

Rants Prices are slightly on the high end, especially for the starters and sides.

Will I return again? The Clan has certainly left an impression on me, especially with its high quality food, novel menu and attentive service. Thankfully, The Clan is part of the revamped restaurant list of the Palate Dining Card where diners can enjoy up to a maximum of 50% discount off their bills. This is definitely a huge draw for me to be back again.
