Food Review: Sugarhall Bar & Grill
The Place Hot on the table is Sugarhall Bar & Grill, an upscale casual chic rum and grill bar along Amoy Street. It was packed when I was there on a Friday evening, with the majority of the patrons heading down for a drink right after work. It was almost impossible to get a table unless you reserve. That said, snagging a table at the bar was not a bad idea, given that there was so much action going on at the bar.The Food Pair up your cocktail or rum with the grilled meat at Sugarhall such as the Hangar Steak ($24), Whole Spring Chicken ($28) or Calamari ($16). The portions of the plates were not huge, but I guessed the idea was really to encourage the sharing of food by ordering a wide variety.
The grilled Calamari ($16) was fresh and chewy though the portions was really small. The Creamy Mushrooms ($10) with lemon thyme foam was so good, especially with the special sauce the mushrooms was infused.
We could not miss out on the Home-made sausages ($32) as well, which comes in beef, chicken and lamb. Our verdict: not as good as the ones from Brotzeit.
Finally the highlight of our meal was inevitably the Whole Spring Chicken ($28). The chicken meat was tender, juicy and tastier than the average ones out there possibly because free-range chicken was used here at Sugarhall.
Rants The slightly raucous atmosphere at Sugarhall might not go down well with couples who are seeking a romantic date.
Will I return again? The food was okay, ambience was chill-lax, crowd was a good mix of locals and expats. That said, I could not think of any strong unique factor in Sugarhall which makes me want to return again. It felt like another bistro bar in Singapore.
