Food Review: District Sushi at Sunshine Plaza | Inexpensive S$13 Bara Chirashi Don in Singapore [Closed]

The Place The cheapest Chirashi Don in Singapore? I headed down to District Sushi, a two months old restaurant located at Sunshine Plaza to rival Sushiro at Thomson Plaza. The space is a no frills setting, with simple interior and a relatively young dining audience given that NAFA is right opposite. The main draw of District Sushi, other than the sushi offerings is no doubt the Bara-Chirashi Don, which created quite a stir back in last November and December when it was only going at S$10 nett. The good news is that there is no GST and service charge here.

The Food The menu is a 2-page offering of mainly Bara-Chirashi Don, Kaisen Don, Sushi and Donburi. I went straight for the Bara-Chirashi Don (S$13) topped with salmon, tuna, octopus and poached prawn. For the price, the portions are really quite decent for me though I can’t say the same for the quality. The rice is not as fragrant here, while of quality of the sashimi chunks are at most passable. At a similar price range, I much prefer the version at Sushiro which is more value for money for me. That said, the price point is definitely an alluring draw, especially for the target market in the Bugis/Bencoolen area.

For a side dish, the Salmon 3-ways Sushi (S$12) is a decent option , though the price is relatively less value for money as opposed to the Bara-Chirashi Don.

Other dishes on the menu include donburi options like Aburi Duck Teriyaki (S$12), Grilled Eel (S$12) and Chicken Katsu (S$12).

Rants The cheap price point may be a draw for curious diners in the initial phase, but the way to go in the long run is still to step up on the quality of the offerings even if it means raising prices by 10-20%.

Will I Return Again? I visited District Sushi without huge expectations and true enough, the food is decent value but not memorable. It is probably the cheapest Bara-Chirashi Don in the city area and is worth a try if you are looking for a cheap version.
