Food Review: Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee at East Village, Simpang Bedok | Savour Claypot Rice by ex-chef of Geylang Claypot Rice

The Place We have lost track of the number of Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee franchises, but if you are in the east, the East Village outlet at Simpang Bedok also serves Claypot Rice. It is a no frills setting with air-conditioning, where you place your order and pay at the counter before your food is served to you. The main differentiation of this Eng’s outlet is the option of having claypot rice as well, which is cooked by one of the ex-chef at the famous Geylang Claypot Rice.

The Food Wantan Mee starts from S$4.50, while Claypot Rice starts from S$7 for the small portion. The Wantan Mee is quite delicious for a start. I like the noodles texture which is springy, while the char siew is very tender with the right lean meat to fat ratio. Do add some of the signature chilli sauce into the noodles, which I must warn is quite spicy!

For a side dish, I also couldn’t resist having the Fried Wantan (S$4). It is fried to a light and crispy texture, highly addictive.

On to the Claypot Rice, one tip is to call beforehand to pre-order, which I did. It only took about ten minutes for the claypot rice to be served when I was at the restaurant. The small portion is good for one person, or for two if you are also having the Wantan Mee. The claypot rice here has a good charred and crispy texture, filled with ingredients like Chinese sausage, vegetables and chicken. The flavours are similar to Geylang Claypot Rice, and while I do not process to have eaten many claypot rice stalls in Singapore, this is a pretty decent and satisfying version for me at least.

Rants You might have heard of the drama behind the Eng’s. If you stumble into any of the Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee, these are managed by the family of the deceased Chef Ng whom founded Eng’s Wantan Noodle. The latter now managed by Lao Huo Tang Group, yes, the herbal soup restaurant chain. We are not taking sides, but we are glad that the dispute has resulted in both Eng’s opening wanton noodle stores across the island.

Will I Return Again? Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee at East Village is like the best of both worlds. Order both the Wanton Mee and Claypot Rice to share, and it should be a delightful meal.
