Food Review: Hao Kee Seafood Duluxe at Toa Payoh | Perhaps one of the Best Zi Char in Singapore

The Place Located in a corner coffeeshop at the void deck of a HDB in Toa Payoh, Hao Kee Seafood Deluxe is one of the more memorable Zi Char meals I had this year. It occupies a stall within the coffeeshop right opposite SPH office in the vicinity.

The Food As there were only three of us, I only managed to try four dishes, all from its signature menu which goes by a photo album on the menu. There are many other more commonly seen Zi Char dishes, hence I would recommend going straight for the signatures if you have limited appetite.

The best dish I had here is definitely the signature Chao Tar Bee Hoon (S$12/medium). Medium size is just right for 2-3 persons, where the bee hoon here spots a slightly charred texture. It is not overly burnt, yet it packs a good and aromatic ‘wok hei’ flavour. It is so good that I couldn’t stop eating this.

The Kailan and Pork Floss (S$12/small) is another dish I enjoyed. Granted, the dish is quite greasy as the Kai Lan is fried till crispy and thin layers. Topped with pork floss, it is a combination which works very well. I would imagine that this would be awesome with porridge instead of rice.

I love tofu, and the Chai Por Tofu (S$12/small) impresses as well. The tofu itself is already tasty, but the Chai Por completes the icing on the cake. The last dish I had is the Ginger Chicken (S$13/small). You get mini chicken meats here glazed with a sweet sauce (which I suspect is honey), along with strong garlic and ginger elements. Expect tender chicken meat which is also sweet in flavour.

Rants Not usual for a coffeeshop, but this is one place you have to reserve to get a table on the busy weekends.

Will I Return Again? It was a comforting meal I had at Hao Kee Seafood Deluxe. I enjoyed every dish which is quite unique on its own. Needless to say, I am keen to return to try the other dishes soon.

Went there specially to try the bee hoon and mee Sua gor. It’s a far cry from Yong Kee at Jalan Besar, cannot even compare. I felt cheated complete waste of time waiting for the food.
