Food Review: Burger & Lobster Debuts in Singapore | Savour Lobster Roll and Jewel Changi Exclusive Sambal Glazed Lobster

The Place I first visited Burger & Lobster in London few years back, and am excited that Burger & Lobster Singapore will open its first outlet on 23 May 2019 at Jewel Changi Airport. The Burger & Lobster Jewel outlet is located on level 5 of the mall, and boasts one of the best views of the Vortex waterfall which is arguably the landmark of the whole Jewel project.

The setting of the restaurant at Jewel Changi is a duplex layout, which I would recommend getting a table at the second level which offers a better view of the Vortex waterfall, as well as cosy table setting for small groups. The ground level of the restaurant is more casual in terms of the seating layout, and it offers bar seats around the bar and a glimpse of the action in semi-open kitchen.

The Food The concise one pager menu makes it easy to zoom it to the highlights, the lobster roll without a doubt for me. But first, I had the B&L Pineapple Iced Tea (S$9), which comes in a biodegrade plastic bag.

The Lobster Roll (S$40) is pretty good value as it comes with a generous chunk of lobster meat. The lobster meat is chilled and fresh, paired along with crispy fries and salad. Another highlight here is the accompanying lemon and garlic butter sauce, which goes well with the fries or the fresh lobster chunks. The brioche bun is pretty good too, which is slightly crispy in texture and buttery enough for me. Go for this if you are a first timer to Burger & Lobster, also one of the most affordable on the menu.

If lobster meat is all you care, go for the Original Lobster (S$65), which comes with a choice of steamed or grilled lobster. The portion here is 1.5lb, which translates to about 680g of wild and live Canadian lobster, and is also served with fries and house salad. This is probably the best way to enjoy the fresh lobster meat here.

If you have tried the signature lobster roll previously in other cities, try the only item on the menu exclusive to Jewel Changi, the Sambal Glazed Lobster (S$65) which is specially curated for Singaporean’s palate. The portion is a whole steamed 1.5lb lobster drenched in sambal, and my table was divided about the intensity of the sambal sauce. Personally, it wasn’t too spicy for me and I suspect half the population would feel the same.

For a burger option, the Mayfair Burger (S$25) is a surprisingly good dish on the menu. It is a relatively big burger with grilled Nebraskan beef patty which is succulent and flavourful. It is also served with fries and house salad.

Desserts are passable for me, where I tried the Chocolate Jewels (S$12), Mango Eaton Mess (S$12) and Tres Leches (S$12).

The chocolate jewel resonates best with me if I were to pick one. The dark chocolate spheres are pretty intense and not too sweet, despite being coated with salted caramel sauce.

Rants The space on the second level of the duplex restaurant is really dark at night if lighting is a concern. Otherwise, it can be romantic as well with the dim setting and waterfall light flashes in the backdrop. The restaurant is currently not taking any reservations too.

Will I Return Again? Jewel Changi Airport is a pleasant mall to dine in and the addition of Burger & Lobster is another strong option for diners. Go for the original lobster roll if you just want something simple or if you are dining alone. Otherwise, get a few more friends and family to share the rest of the Burger & Lobster dishes, as well as the bill.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
