Food Review: 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodle at Whampoa Hawker Centre | Popular Old School Prawn Mee Stall in Balastier

The Place Located at one of the mature estates in city fringe, 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodle is a popular hawker stall located in Blk 91 at Whampoa Market. There is another 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodle stall located at Tekka Centre, which is managed by third generation and owner Li Ruifang. Back to the Whampoa stall which is managed by the second generation, the perpetual long queue especially on Saturdays mean that you have to budget a considerable waiting time. I waited 45 minutes in the queue on a Saturday morning.

The Food Like most prawn noodle stalls, choose from dry or soup version here and prices start from S$4. If you love other types of noodles like Kway Teow or Bee Hoon, do come earlier as both types were sold out before 11am during my visit. If it is your first time, I would suggest trying both the dry and soup versions to make the queue worthwhile. Share it with someone else if possible.

The Dry Bee Hoon I tried is tossed in chilli and ketchup sauce, topped with copious amount of fried shallots and served with a medium size bowl of soup. It is a good balance of both types of sauces here, and the fresh prawn meat definitely adds to the icing on the dish. The fried shallots are awesome, especially after mixing it all with the bee hoon. The soup is very important for me as well, and it is comforting that this prawn broth is luscious and sweet enough for me.

I also had the Mixed Yellow Noodles and Bee Hoon Soup, which is more straightforward in terms of taste profile as compared to the dry version. Similar to the dry version, it is topped with fried shallots which goes well with the hearty prawn broth too.

Rants The long queue is definitely a dissuading factor to return.

Will I Return Again? It is a good stall in the estate to have old school prawn noodle flavours here at 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodle. It is no doubt a good bowl of prawn mee, though I wouldn’t mind having it again if only the queue isn’t as long.

Hole in pocket rating of 1/5 means is cheap or expensive? $4 wont burn the pocket but it drags down the overall rating. Im confused.

I went to 545 Whampoa for the prawn mee. Nothing great
I still prefer the one at Bedok North 216, facing the main road. The soup is clear and price start from $3. To here are 4 stalls at 216 selling prawn noodles and they all have queue. The one at Bedok South Blk 16 is also good morning. Better than 545.
