Food Review: So Good Char Chan Tang At Midview City, Sin Ming Lane | Authentic Hong Kong Cafe & Teahouse Experience In Singapore

The Place Hong Kong style cafes in Singapore is usually not my top meal choices, but when The Rantee suggested checking out So Good Char Chan Tang at Midview City, I was intrigued. As superficial as it sounds, even the name sounds like a mall in Hong Kong. Located in a Sin Ming industrial building, this teahouse cafe brand opened about two years ago and is opened by ex-Imperial Treasure chef. There is another outlet at TripleOne Somerset.

The space was bustling on a rainy Sunday morning much to my surprise, given the inclement weather and obscure location. Nothing much to shout in terms of the interior, imagine a canteen-style setting where you order at the cashier and collect your own food once the buzzer rings.

In addition, So Good Bakery is right beside the space of So Good Char Chan Tang.

The Food As with the messy ambience typical of Hong Kong cafes, the menu here is very varied. There are different menus at different timings of the day, though some dishes remain available all day. French Toast, Macaroni Soup, Hong Kong style noodles – I was reminded of Hong Kong and it was a promising sign.

I had the Macaroni Soup with Ham Set (S$7.50), which also comes with two pan-fried eggs, hot milk tea and bread with butter. Macaroni Soup is a very common dish found in the cafes in Hong Kong, and this version is comforting.

The milk tea quite thick, and a very decent version. The bread with butter is average though!

I love my scrambled eggs, hence the Scrambled Egg Thick Toast (S$3.30). Needless to say, my benchmark is probably too high as I compared it with the truffle scrambled egg toast I had previously in Hong Kong before. I need to stay grounded in Singapore.

Another must have side dish for me is the Polo Bun with Iced Butter (S$2.30). This is quite good as the bun is buttery enough with a crispy crust. My benchmark for Polo Bun in Singapore is the ones from Kai Duck, still one of the best I had so far.

Rants The location is relatively inaccessible by oubliette transport, and the space can get busy on weekends. You also need to find your own table before ordering.

Will I Return Again? It is not so much for the quality of food but the industrial location vibes and the fact that there is actually a Char Chan Tang tucked in this corner here which makes it charming. So Good, that a slice of Hong Kong exists here, especially with the occasional Cantonese chatter beside you.
