Food Review: Canchita Peruvian Cuisine At Dempsey | Beautiful Lush Dining Ambience In Dempsey Hill

The Place Located in Dempsey, I decided to check out Canchita Peruvian Cuisine after seeing pictures of its gorgeous space online. I was admittedly drawn to the space rather than the cuisine initially, and I didn’t mind Peruvian food at all which is hard to come by in Singapore. The space of Canchita Peruvian Cuisine occupies two main buildings, and I recommend the lower building from its main entrance which is stronger in its garden theme, the dining tables by the window look out to the surrounding greenery.

The Food The menu is mainly split into bites, ceviche, main courses, Peruvian rice and charcoal grilled dishes. If ala carte option is too much of a hassle, there is also a 5-course Tasting Menu (S$128).

For a start, I had the Patacones (S$14), an easy snack to start – green plantain crackers with guacamole.

From the Ceviche bar, there are numerous flavours to go for and I settled with the Ceviche Clasico (S$26) – Fresh market fish with Peruvian Rocoto Chilli Tiger’s Milk, Grilled Octopus & Purple Corn Tortilla Chips. The Tiger’s Milk is slightly spicy but it is really appetising as well.

For mains, I had the Arroz con Mariscos (S$34), a seafood Peruvian rice dish with Langoustine, Prawns, Calamari, Crab Butter and White Wine. It is not hard to tell that colours play a big part in Peruvian dishes, and the rice here spots a moist texture and a rich seafood flavour. Great to share for 2-3 persons.

For meats, I went for the Lomo Saltado (S$42). This dish is interesting in the sense that the presentation looks very oriental instead of Peruvian. Indeed, it is a Peruvian-Cantonese style stir-fried wagyu beef tenderloin with tomatoes, onions, green peas and potato fries. Pretty addictive and crispy fries beneath the beef which is half soaked in the sauce, while the chunky beef bits are succulently done.

Rants The drinks menu is more extensive than the food menu. I also feel it is more suited for small groups than couples, as the dishes are quite heavy in flavour, which makes it worthwhile to order a wider variety and share it out.

Will I Return Again? Peruvian restaurants are hard to come by in Singapore and if you are looking to try the cuisine, this restaurant in Dempsey is worth a visit. Bonus for the gorgeous, garden theme space too.
