Food Review: Serangoon BBQ & Curry 1983 (Formerly Serangoon Nasi Padang) At Sin Ming | Delicious Nasi Padang From A Long-Standing Brand

The Place I finally made my way to Serangoon BBQ & Curry (SBC) in Sin Ming last weekend, one of the most well-known Nasi Padang establishments in Singapore. SBC was previously Serangoon Nasi Padang, and it only reopened in its new identity Serangoon BBQ & Curry (SBC) in 2021, run by the stall’s owners (Mr Peter Tan and his wife (Auntie Cheong) along with their son Eugene. Serangoon Nasi Padang has a long-standing history since 1983, which explains its stream of regular patrons even as it relocated under a different brand name SBC.

The humble stall is located in a corner space of a coffeeshop at 22 Sin Ming Road, where it opens at 10am.

The Food Seeing is believing. I was excited to see the glorious display of the 20-odd dishes at the counter where you have a choice of set menu or simply go ala carte and pick what you fancy. Every dish is freshly prepared early in the day, and the team takes painstaking steps to ensure each dish is executed perfectly, right from the marination to the cooking/grilling of the dishes.

The Sedaps Sets start from S$5 and it comes with a main dish, rice, and two side dishes. Additional side dishes can be added for an extra S$1. Ala carte options include Achar (S$4 for a portion), Muah Otah (S$2 per piece), and Begedil (S$1 each).

It was my first time at the stall and I basically had an “omakase”. Visually, the dishes are stunning, especially when juxtaposed against the beautiful butterfly pea rice.

The one dish which is a must try for first timers is the Serangoon Fried Chicken (S$6), which comes with a whole well-marinated chicken leg along with crispy golden skin and tender meat.

Some of the vegetable options to expect here include Brinjal and Lady’s Fingers, Curry Vegetables, Achar, and Sambal Kangkong.

Personally, anything with curry at SBC work well for me as the curry sauce here is not too spicy which makes it very easy for me to go with the rice without breaking into a sweat.

Start with some Achar at the start which has a refreshing flavour and crunchy bite to it, almost like a palate cleanser for me. I also enjoyed dishes like the delicious Muah Otah and Begedil.

Rants Some of the dishes might sell out quite fast, so the best tip is to arrive early when it opens.

Will I Return Again? The spread at  Serangoon BBQ & Curry 1983 is amazing. I love the comforting, home-cooked flavours of the dishes and the wide variety of options means there is definitely something for everyone. If you are a Nasi Padang lover, this is one spot to check out in Singapore.
