Food Review: Justin At Tangs Plaza In Orchard Road | Celebrity Chef Justin Quek’s Casual Gastro Cafe-Bar Restaurant

The Place Tucked away at a quiet corner of Tang Plaza Level 4 in Orchard Road is the new Justin restaurant by celebrity Chef Justin Quek. This is Chef Justin’s own gastro café-bar in Singapore, and it took over the space of the now-defunct Dancing Fish Signature. The interior of Justin is casual with ample natural light in the day especially if you sit in the indoor terrace section of the restaurant, which is lovely.

The Food The menu at Justin is quite extensive and spans across Asian and French dishes with starters, brunch dishes, sharing plates, mains and desserts. Asian dishes include the likes of Homemade Foie Gras Xiao Long Bao and Prawn Noodle Soup. Justin is also Australia’s number one pure coffee brand Vitoria Coffee’s official flagship store, a first in Singapore and the region. A wide range of cocktails and wines are also available on the menu, including wine labels carried by the name of Justin Quek himself.

My meal started with Our Vegetables Platter (S$28), a vegan-friendly and gluten-free option, which is a mix of Greek vegetables, couscous, asparagus, grilled mushroom vegetables, capsicum coulis, basil oil, micro greens and fresh herbs.

For brunch, there is the likes of Scrambled Eggs (S$20) where you have the option to add ingredients like 6 grams pronto covior & Champagne sauce (add S$20) if you want to luxe it up. Nice silky texture of the scrambled here and the champagne sauce is delicate as well. Simple looking presentation, but the scrambled eggs is delicious.

Another brunch dish is the Wild Mushrooms, Poached Egg, Parmentier (S$28) where the poached eggs is mixed with house cured iberico pork, an earthy thyme jus, and served atop a bed of velvety potato mousseline.

Bar snacks include options like the House-made Iberico Pork Char Siu Fried Mantou (S$18/3 pcs), made with tender and flavourful slices of grilled char siu iberico pork, cucumber pickles, shredded lettuce, and coriander leaves. That bun spots a nice golden texture as well along with the flavourful char siu meat.

Another easy starter is the Poached Oyster in Superior Sauce (2 pieces S$14) with royal chives, and garlic.

An Asian dish which I enjoyed is the Korean Ikan Billis “Myeolchi” Fried Rice (S$23) where you get wok hei notes with good quality Korean anchovies, fried egg, cucumber, and Justin’s house-made sambal sauce. I love the sambal sauce which adds an even better flavour to the seemingly normal looking but delicious fried rice!

I enjoyed the Fresh Crabmeat Capellini “LKY” (S$30), a dish rumoured to be one of the favourites of the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and hence the name “LKY”. The dish looks simple, and I do like the simple yet delicious flavours. The silky capellini pasta is sauteed with fresh crab meat and herbs.

Another signature dish to go for is the Crepinettes Of Pig Trotters “Perigordine” (S$42) which features braised pig trotters, sauteed duck foie gras, wild mushrooms, and thyme jus, beautifully plated on a potato mousseline. Lovely sauce here where the foie gras is stuffed within the pork!

For desserts, expect the likes of Freshly Baked Fine Apple Tart on Crepe Pan (S$40 for 4-6 pax), Housemade Salted Gula Java Ice Cream (S$6 per scoop), Freshly Baked Financier (6 pieces S$12) and Pineapple Carpaccio, Calamansi Sorbet (S$15).

My recommendation is the Freshly Baked Fine Apple Tart on Crepe Pan (S$40) which serves between 4 to 6 people. Served with toasted almonds and salted gula java sauce, I like how it is unlike the typical tart texture where this comes in thin crepe-style with slightly crisp edges. Add on the Housemade Salted Gula Java Ice Cream which also goes well with the apple tart.

One of the highlights of the dessert menu is the Pineapple Carpaccio, Calamansi Sorbet (S$15) which brings together thin slices of pineapple infused in a spice solution before being served with lime zest and calamansi sorbet.

An even more signature dessert to consider is the Classic Crepe Suzette with Vanilla Ice Cream (S$33/Good for 2) where the house-made crepes is cooked in orange juice, segments, zest and flambé with Grand Marnier.

If you have little space for dessert, something harmless and light to order is The Freshly Baked Financier (S$12 for 6 pcs) which spots a crisp and moist texture.

Rants The restaurant is served by a private lift as well in the event Tangs is closed, where it might be challenging to locate the private lift to head up to the restaurant.

Will I Return Again? It is great that Chef Justin has taken a more casual approach to his latest and only dining concept in Singapore. The gastro-cafe concept should resonate well in Orchard Road, and this is one hidden spot in Tangs to catch up with friends in town.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
