Food Review: 67 Pall Mall Singapore At Shaw Centre | Private Wine Club In A Gorgeous Penthouse Space In Orchard Road

The Place This is easily the most beautiful wine and dine destination in Orchard Road. I had the privilege of checking out 67 Pall Mall Singapore, a private Members’ Club opened in Singapore last March which occupies a penthouse space at Shaw Centre. The brand 67 Pall Mall was founded in 2015 in London, and the Shaw Centre 15,000 sqf penthouse space was formerly the private residence of Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw.

I am first drawn to the 6.8 metres high ceiling of the main dining hall, which also used to be a ballroom, where you get ample natural lighting in the day with a 270-degree views of the Orchard cityscape. The interior design takes on a 1920s and 1930s Shanghai art deco feel, design elements from the original 67 Pall Mall London and visual elements from Asian cinema’s heyday, a tribute to the Club’s origins and the heritage of the space.

Some unique and starking features in the main dining hall include the six-metre-tall glass tower which houses the biggest wine list in Southeast Asia, and a whisky wall with a display of more than 400 bottles.

As the space of 67 Pall Mall Singapore spans across level 27 and 28, the main dining hall is on level 27, while level 28 is home to the Naughty Corner and Whisky Bar. I love the vibes at the restaurant level which is buzzing with energy in the evening during my visit. There is a good mix of different configurations of seating arrangement, from tailormade leather booth seats and dining tables to customised bar seatings.

Up on the 28th floor is the Naughty Corner and Whisky Bar, a space just like the London Club’s namesake spirits den. An interesting trivial fact of the Naughty Corner is that it sits in the entirety of what was once the Penthouse’s bedroom, where the ambience at this 55-seater space exudes a more intimate lounge experience as compared to the main hall on level 27.

In common with the London and Verbier Clubs, all wines in the Club are served in Zalto glasses. The touch on these glasses is amazingly light and delicate.

The Food Wine is definitely the highlight of 67 Pall Mall Singapore as there is a proud collection of 5,000 wines and 1,000 wines served by the glass, home to the biggest wine list in Singapore, and one of the largest collections of fine wines in the world.

The food at 67 Pall Mall Singapore’s restaurant offers an extensive repertoire of signature dishes from its London Club as well as Asian-inspired dishes to complement the wines.

For starters, I had the Bang Bang Burrata (S$29), an innovative East-meets-West creation. I would never expect burrata to go with Sichuan flavours, and this version is quite a well-balanced burrata served in Dan Dan noodle sauce – a black vinegar dressing with Sichuan peppers and crushed peanuts. The other interesting Asian element is the pairing of the burrata with our local dough fritters, ‘you tiao’.

Another dish that is easy to share and goes well with some white wine is the Classic Tarte Flambée (S$16) which showcases a crispy thin base with moreish toppings such onion, bacon and gruyere; mushroom and cheese; and quatto formaggi.

For something classic from the menu at the London Club, you cannot go wrong with the Scotch Egg (S$22) where you get a perfect soft-boiled free-range egg enrobed with flavourful haggis sausage and a crispy golden shell, served with piccalilli.

For mains, I really like the New Zealand Little Neck Clam Casserole (S$38) – Clam casserole with pork sausage, spinach, mushrooms and white wine broth, served with garlic bread. The best bit for me is the moreish white wine broth which I literally drink on its own to savour its flavour.

The Roasted Red Snapper (S$58) goes well with the mild XO sambal, served along with sauerkraut salad.

Alternatively, go for the Imperial Valley’s Brawley Grain-fed Angus Ribeye (S$118/500g) which features beef from Southern California’s Imperial Valley. The Josper oven grilled Ribeye is served with beef jus, where the beef is rich in flavour and succulently done to a perfect medium rare.

Other than the usual ala carte menu, there is also a 67 Resident Chef Series Menu which rotates periodically. I managed to try the Red Cabbage (S$26) from the 67 Resident Chef Series Menu by Chef Jeremy of Restaurant Jag, which features red cabbage terrine, red cabbage and pomegranate salad, curry leaves and lemongrass.

For desserts, I recommend the 67 Snickers (S$18) if you just want a small bite after a heavy meal. This is a crowd favourite treat from the London Club, where you get a crunchy bite of chocolate and peanut praline dome filled with multiple layers of roasted chocolate peanut praline, chocolate ice-cream, crunchy feuilletine and salted caramel. Pop it in one bite, really good!

Something more substantial to have is the Sticky Medjool Date Pudding (S$18) which combines the flavours of sun-dried medjool dates, gula melaka, toffee and salted caramel. The pudding goes well with the scoop of house made Madagascan-vanilla ice cream and finished with Brandy snaps and almond.

Rants The initial joining fees to become a member is $3k in order to gain access to 67 Pall Mall Singapore.

Will I Return Again? It is a classic case of joining the club as a member or finding a friend who is a member to bring you here. Regardless of its exclusivity, I really like the space and ambience of 67 Pall Mall Singapore where I had good wines and food, and you can be promised of that.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
