Food Review: SukiyakiJIN At Shaw Centre | One Pot Wagyu Beef Mountain Tower Tomato Sukiyaki

The Place Les Amis Group’s Japanese Collective has quietly added a new name to the Orchard Road dining scene, and it is one that is clearly engineered for visual impact as much as flavour. Opened on 2 May 2026, SukiyakiJIN sits on the first level of Shaw Centre, positioning itself as a casual yet theatrical take on Japanese sukiyaki — headlined by its rather dramatic A5 Wagyu Spicy Tomato “Mountain” Sukiyaki.

The Food From the moment the pot hits the table, it is obvious SukiyakiJIN is playing the spectacle card. This is sukiyaki turned vertical: a towering mound of marbled Japanese A5 wagyu layered over a bed of classic sukiyaki ingredients. Napa cabbage, Japanese leek, onions, shimeji and enoki mushrooms form the supporting cast, alongside silken tofu and springy konjac noodles underneath.

The main highlight here is the Signature Tomato Sukiyaki (S$48++ per person, minimum two diners). The tomato base is bright and tangy, underpinned by a house blend of four different shoyu. The flavour is bold and slightly unexpected, and there is also another twist – freshly chopped chilli padi on the side to add to the broth to suit the local palate.

It is a sinful and sweet broth to sip to be honest with the addition of tomatoes, as it does get oily with all the beef fat soaked in the broth. In keeping with sukiyaki tradition, the wagyu is best enjoyed dipped into a pasteurised Japanese Raw Egg (S$2++).

For purists, there is also the Original Sukiyaki (S$45++ per person, minimum two diners), built around Tamari shoyu from Nagoya.

Towards the end of the meal, the remaining sauce becomes the base for the final act. You can choose a Cheese Risotto, made with steamed Hokkaido Yumepirika rice and melted cheese for a rich finish, or opt for Inaniwa udon to soak up the concentrated sauce.

The set also includes ice cream as dessert.

Rants If you are imagining a traditional style setting for Sukiyaki, this is quite a deviation from tradition.

Will I Return Again? Overall, SukiyakiJIN feels purpose-built for those who enjoy their Japanese dining with a theatrical flair — familiar elements, reworked with bold flavours, strong visuals, and enough communal energy to make it a fun group option along Orchard Road rather than a hushed, formal affair.
