The Place This is more than a garden. Meet Open Farm Community, one of the latest dining concept to grace Dempsey area along Minden Road. I fell in love with the lush green space right from the entrance, different from the urban Singapore we are all used to. Walking through the cafe bar and mini retail house, the main restaurant is located behind in a much bigger glasshouse, with modern interior touches and open concept kitchen where I caught a glimpse of the deft hands of the chefs at play. There are not many places in Singapore with a nice natural lighting and surrounding, and I daresay this is one of the most beautiful restaurants I have been to in awhile.
Opened barely over a month, the restaurant is currently running at full capacity and we heard from a staff that it’s best to reserve a week in advance. As walk-in customers, we had to settle for the alfresco area instead as all indoor seats are fully occupied. The unusual cooling Saturday afternoon made the alfresco seatings very pleasant this day, made even better with us overlooking the urban garden, where I spotted basil leaves and pepper amongst other plants!
Am I in Ubud, Bali?
The Food There is so much to expect, given that OFC is a joint collaboration between celebrity chef Ryan Clift of Tipping Club, Edible Garden City and established F&B player The Spa Esprit Group. The kitchen uses ingredients from its own farm wherever possible, a rare yet precious sustainable dining practice which is much lacking locally due to our natural constraints.
Before my food, I always need a strong punch of coffee, from the coffee bar which uses Common Man Coffee Roaster beans.
The brunch menu is only available on weekends till 3pm, so I couldn’t resist having the Truffle scrambled Organic Egg, shimeji & portobello mushrooms, baby spinach & sourdough. We were in awe of the plating when the dish arrived, to say the least. There are many ways to plate scrambled eggs and toast but to do it tastefully brings a restaurant to another level. There’s nothing not to love about this seemingly simple dish, as all the flavours from the mushrooms to the baby spinach fell in place so deliciously.
The Ranbee was craving for salads, hence the Warm salad of broccoli, pine nuts, sugar snap peas topped with crumbled feta & minden mint. Salads and brocolli rarely satisfy my taste bud as it is usually too plain in taste but this combination worked for me somehow.
I love eggs, so stopping at one doesn’t apply to me. I was bent on trying the Coal-baked Omelette, interestingly paired with smoked haddock, tarragon & grain mustard mornay, something good for sharing. The smoked haddock and mornay gave this dish a strong flavour than your usual omelette, hence it can be quite a heavy starter for one person to stomach.
For desserts, the Lemon tart with basil ice cream was absolutely gorgeous. Plated like it resembled a mini garden, the basil ice cream was such a delight to have, absolutely palate cleansing and psychologically tasted healthier as well. I was impressed by the creative pairing of the dessert, as well as the use of an ingredient like basil which I spotted in the garden.
Rants Be prepared for a less comfortable outdoor seats on a mercilessly hot day if the restaurant is full, or else do reserve well in advance as a wasted trip to this not-so-accessbile part of Dempsey is potentially dampening, much so if you are without a car.
Will I Return Again? Open Farm Community is undoubtedly one of my favourite restaurants this year so far. Farm to table concept is set to be a revolutionary concept for our dining scene. Furthermore, what’s not to love about lush dining, good food and a lovely glasshouse?
