Food Review: Nude Grill at Marina One, Downtown | Going Nude (again) by the team behind popular Nude Seafood at MBFC

The Place The way to go nude legally. Meet Nude Grill at Marina One, the offspring of Nude Seafood located right opposite at Marina Bay Financial Centre. As opposed to its sister restaurant’s bright space, Nude Grill takes on a darker tone to reflect its meaty theme. Located at level one of the East Tower along with Majestic Restaurant, the spacious restaurant overlooks the greenery of the building, while the interior is sleek and chic.

The Food The menu is split mainly into cocktails, starters, mains and desserts with. A sharing plate concept. We started with starters such as the Heirloom Tomato (S$15), Foie Gras Parfait (S$15), Cuttlefish Risotto (S$18), Pork Jowl (S$18) and Beef Tartare (S$19). My favourite from the starters is easily the Foie Gras Parfait, which has a silky, mousse-like texture made of passionfruit gel and Sarawak black pepper tuile. It goes extremely well with the sourdough toast, and is surprisingly very light and easy on the palate.

The Pork Jowl (S$18) is my next favourite starter, with its tender texture and delicious shoyu-cinnamon glaze.

That is not to say that the rest of the starters are bad, as the combination of ingredients are pretty interesting too. Take the Heirloom Tomatoes (S$15) for example, where the Northern Thailand tomatoes is paired with umeshu jelly and sakura ebi.

On the other hand, the Beef Tartare (S$19) is accompanied by a myriad of fusion ingredients such as ‘chye poh’ preserved radish, green mango, ponzu and mint, along with sourdough toast.

For mains, the Poussin (S$29) is a must try. This dish is essentially roast chicken served with onion tempura. The texture of the chicken is very moist and tender, though one of the unique elements here is the ‘dang gui’ or Chinese Angelica root jus. To go with the tender chicken, glutinous rice is also served as a side. This mains is Rantee’s favourite for the night.

The Secreto of Iberico Pork (S$39) is also another hit for me. Served with roasted pumpkin, smoked potato foam and cherries, I enjoyed the tender pork.

Not a fan of meats? How about trying the Pumpkin (S$24), a beautiful plate of slow-cooked pumpkin, duck egg sauce, wakame in ponzu, pumpkin seeds, sage oil and togarashi. This vegetarian dish is quite substantial on its own, and I feel that the best way to enjoy the food at Nude Grill is to share the dishes for variety. I like that while the pumpkin is the lead ingredient here, the whole dish does not feel singular as there are other delicious complementing ingredients like the pumpkin seeds and wakame to add more dimension to the dish.

If you are up for some steaks, one of the newest additions to the menu is the Time (S$16/100g), essentially 35 day dry-aged Prime Rib from New Zealand, which is approximately 800-1000g for 2-3 pax to share. It is served with 60-day housemade black garlic, potato rosti with bonito and vegetables. I can’t help but compare this to the New Zealand steaks I had in Wakanui, coincidentally also in the same building. Personally, I prefer Wakanui’s steak which I find more tender and succulent. That said, my other dining companions seem to enjoy the prime rib. The grass-fed beef is not high in fat content for the typical wagyu beef tenderness, hence it can also lean towards the dry side. One word of caution is that this dish takes about 45-55 minutes to prepare, so do pre-order in advance if you are pressed for time.

If you only have space for one dessert, the Dark Chocolate (S$17) is my recommendation. The 66% Valrhona chocolate cake is filled with a sane dose of Jack Daniels, served along with rich cocoa nib ice cream.

Rants We find the pricing on the high side for a casual setting.

Will I Return Again? Nude Grill is a good addition and complement to the mix of restaurants at Marina One, such as Wakanui and Majestic Restaurant. While prices are not cheap for an everyday affair, it is a venue for a well-deserved meal after a long week at work. For good food, some drinks, and a place to chill over your close friends, Nude Grill comes out amongst the top choice in the area.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
