Food Review: Lad & Dad at Maxwell Food Centre | Affordable British Fish & Chips and Bar Grubs in Chinatown
The Place Mention Maxwell Food Centre and Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is easily one of the few stalls that come to most people’s mind. Meet Lad & Dad, one of the rare modern hawker stall concept which specialises in British bar grub. This is quite possibly the only hawker stall in Singapore at the moment which dishes out classic British bar dishes. Lad & Dad was started by father and son combination, and it started out at Serangoon Gardens before it relocated to Maxwell.
The Food There were only a few dishes stated on the stall’s menu during my visit, with classic British fares like English Bacon and Chip Butty (S$5), Beef Stew (S$10) and Chicken Stew (S$8). I only managed to try one dish on the menu, the Fish & Chips ($10). Served in a takeaway box, the Atlantic Haddock fish is fried to a nice golden brown texture. The crispy texture on the outside is perfect, while the fish meat is fresh. For the price, the portion is quite reasonable too. Served with tartare sauce and mushy peas, the crispy chips are pretty addictive.
Rants The plastic utensils do not work well when it comes to cutting the fried fish.
Will I Return Again? I enjoyed the Fish & Chips at Lad & Dad. While hawker style British dishes is not that common, the stall is a good addition to the bustling Maxwell Food Centre. This stall is worth trying if you want to have something else other than chicken rice.

Finally a fish and chip without using the Viet Pangasius dory? Great news! Just back from UK where cod and haddock are ubiquitous. Tq for the review.
