Food Review: Kuroya Sukiyaki At Mohamed Sultan Road | Authentic Japanese Sukiyaki Dining Experience In Singapore

The Place I struggle to find authentic and good Japanese sukiyaki restaurants in Singapore. After some research, I decided to check out Kuroya Sukiyaki, a few years old restaurant along Mohamed Sultan Road which specialises in sukiyaki. Kuroya Sukiyaki hails from Fukuoka, Japan, and there are only two outlets with one being in Japan and the other in Singapore. For a restaurant in Singapore to serve a specific type of Japanese cuisine (sukiyaki in this case), it should be good, right?

Stepping into Kuroya Sukiyaki already evoked that first visual sense of being transported to Japan. The seating area is well-partitioned, where you have to remove your shoes to sit in the tatami-like setting. I like the ambience, as the slightly warm lighting is perfect for dinner yet it is not too dim like other restaurants. There are also regular tables if removing your shoes to dine is not an appealing offer. Towards the end of the restaurant, there is a counter seat setting where you can watch the chefs at work.

The Food Kuroya Sukiyaki is well, famous for its sukiyaki though there is also shabu-shabu option on the menu. The options typically are set meals with minimum of 2 orders, where the basic Sukiyaki set starts from S$148++ person (Appetizer, Salad, 150g of Japanese Wagyu Sukiyaki, Rice or Udon, and Dessert).

I wanted to try the best of both worlds, and given that the restaurant uses wagyu beef, I decided on the Tenderloin Steak & Sukiyaki Set (S$188++ per person). This set includes Japanese Wagyu Tenderloin Steak (80g), Japanese Wagyu Sukiyaki (100g), Rice or Udon, and Dessert.

The wagyu tenderloin is really a small portion as per what I expected, but that makes it all the more palatable with its succulent flavour.

For the sukiyaki part, it offers a different way of enjoying the wagyu beef.

Do not overcook the sliced beef, and dip it in the accompanying egg. It reminded me of my Japan experience instantly.

Towards the end of the meal, we opted for one portion of rice and udon each. I poured the rice into the sukiyaki pot, and it soaked up all the essence of the broth.

Rants There is barely any ala carte options on the menu where options are set menus. Be prepared to splurge.

Will I Return Again? I miss Japan, and a large part is the authentic Japanese dining experience which is hard to come by in Singapore, let alone a specialty Sukiyaki restaurant. Kuroya Sukiyaki is definitely one I will return for the overall dining ambience, including the good service and quality of food.
