Food Review: Seng Huat Duck Rice At Sembawang Hills Food Centre | Delicious Teochew Braised Duck Rice Along Upper Thomson Road

The Place This hawker centre is a hidden gem in the north of Singapore, with a couple of popular stalls here which I am willing to brave the long queues for. One of these stall is Seng Huat Duck Rice. First thing first, the hawker centre is located at Upper Thomson Road, not exactly at Sembawang. And parking is limited in the vicinity during peak meal hours, though there is a larger public car park with entrance via Jalan Kuras.

There is more than just Seng Huat Duck Rice at Sembawang Hills Food Centre, where you spot long queues at stalls including Sin Hoe Huat Cafe for their toasts and San Ba Wang Guo Zhi Shu Shi for their kway chap. Do head here if you have not visited this hawker centre yet.

The Food Seng Huat does Teochew-style braised duck, which has a more watery and light sauce. Personally, I have a penchant for Teochew-style braised duck as the braised sauce is typically more flavourful and it pairs better with steamed rice. Of course, this is up to your personal liking!

The Braised Duck Rice Set (from S$4.50 per pax) here is served in this rather old-school flower-print plates, though that is not a reason why you should visit here. The tender meats are chopped thinner than the usual, though that ensures the meats gets well drenched by the braised sauce.

I am not someone who typically dips my duck meat into the chilli sauce, though my dining partner loved the chilli here, which I noted to be slightly on the sweeter end. I usually complete my orders at all braised duck stalls with braised eggs, and making sure I get a serving of the herbal soup.

I also saw a fellow diner ordered the Duck Porridge (S$2.80) and got greedy and ordered a bowl as well. As I prefer bold flavours, would not have mind if more of the braised sauce is adding to the porridge. Also noticed that usually the tougher and drier meats are used to mix into such porridge, and without the duck skin, I personally feel that the taste fell short of my liking. Will stick to my usual order of duck rice next time instead!

Rants The queue can be quite long during the weekends, though if you head here too late, it might be sold out as well.

Will I Return Again? Don’t even doubt it, you will definitely see me joining the queue again for some Seng Huat Duck Rice.
